Mayo Clinic receives more than $100 million in competitive peer review grants each year and it has 12 major cancer research programs in place.
Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Rochester, Minnesota houses the Mayo Clinic Thoracic Surgery Division, formed in 1915. The Thoracic Surgery Division is one of the largest in the country. Made up of a group of five board-certified general chest surgeons, the chest surgery team provides comprehensive diagnosis and surgical care to cancer patients with diseases of the chest wall and mediastinum, diaphragm, esophagus, lungs, and trachea. The team of pathologists, oncologists, diagnostic specialists, and surgeons diagnose and treat mesothelioma using VATS biopsy, and extrapleural pneumonectomy, and Talc pleurodesis. The majority of procedures are performed at St. Mary's Hospital, which is fully accredited by the Joint Commission.
