Best Baby Sunscreen 2022 | Sun Safety For Babies

Baby Sunscreen Guide

a. Do babies need sunscreen?

Babies under the age of six months should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Their skin has an insufficient amount of melanin, the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color and offers some sun protection.

Older babies should be kept out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the summer and between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun is at its highest.

Apply sunscreen to your baby’s skin that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Ensure that the product shields them from both UVA and UVB radiation. However, because of their delicate skin, they should pick products that are less likely to contain additives.

b. Why can’t you use sunscreen on babies under 6 months?

Sunscreen should not be used on newborns under the age of six months. It is because their skin may not be able to keep the chemicals in sunscreen out as well as those of older children and adults and are more likely to develop a rash or irritation.

Therefore, if your children are younger than 6 months, best to check with your pediatrician before applying any sunscreen.

c. Should I put sunscreen on my child every day?

Best to apply sunscreen to your children whenever they go outside.

Sun damage and skin cancer are caused by ultraviolet radiation, which is constantly present. Because UV radiation is not filtered by clouds, you are still exposed to them even though the sun isn’t visible. Sunscreen blocks these rays, lowering your risk of getting sunburned.

d. How to choose the right sunscreen?

Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active component in the sunscreen. These mineral-based compositions are non-toxic and physically stop rays from reaching the baby’s skin. Broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB radiation are also important and an SPF of 30 or more is recommended.

b. Which Ingredients Should Be Avoided in Baby Sunscreen?

Make sure your baby's sunscreen doesn't contain oxybenzone, a chemical that may have hormonal effects. Moreover, scents, dyes, PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), parabens, and phthalates should all be avoided because they can irritate baby's sensitive skin.

c. How to Apply Baby Sunscreen?

You can put your baby in sun-protective clothing (long-sleeved if at all possible), a sun hat, and sunglasses to reduce the need for sunscreen.

Apply a light layer of baby sunscreen to any remaining exposed areas, making sure to use one with an SPF of 30 or higher and applying it at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you should reapply baby's sunscreen every two hours when you're outside, as well as after water-based activities and towel drying.
