Can Antioxidants Help Against COVID-19?

Image
COVID-19, a new strain of coronavirus (CoV), was identified in Wuhan, China, in 2019. No specific therapies are available and investigations regarding COVID-19 treatment are lacking. Update: WHO launches global megatrial of the four most promising coronavirus treatments Do antioxidants work as a coronavirus treatment for sure? No, but the potential benefit may be good enough at this point as there is no specific proven treatment in the first place. Here, we have compiled and updated a few significant studies and related reviews on Coronavirus treatment with antioxidants. This list is a work-in-progress list as new evidence might be added from time to time. Vitamin C A large review of 29 studies in 11,306 people demonstrated that regularly supplementing with vitamin C at an average dose of 1–2 grams per day reduced the duration of colds by 8% in adults and 14% in children ( PubMed ). Interestingly, the review also demonstrated that regularly taking vitamin C supplements

One Man Died in Arizona and Multiple Reports of Poisonings While Self-Medicating with Chloroquine against Coronavirus

A man thought aquarium cleaner with the same name as the anti-coronavirus drug chloroquine would prevent coronavirus. It killed him. In Maricopa County, Arizona, a couple in their 60s watched politicians and news anchors on TV tout chloroquine, an anti-malaria drug that has shown the ability to disrupt some viruses but that has not yet been proved effective against the novel coronavirus. That pharmaceutical name matched the label on a bottle of chemicals they used to clean their koi pond, NBC News reported. The fish tank solvent that treats aquatic parasites contains the same active ingredient as the drug, but in a different form that can poison people. “I saw it sitting on the back shelf and thought, ‘Hey, isn’t that the stuff they’re talking about on TV?’ ” the wife, who was not named, told the network. “We were afraid of getting sick.” The couple reportedly poured some of the fish tank cleaning chemical, chloroquine phosphate, into soda and drank it. They hoped it would st

Best Cord Blood Banking in Singapore 2020: Price and Reviews

Stem cells  are the basis of bone marrow transplants, a technique used to treat diseases such as leukaemia for many decades. Since the first stem cell transplant in 1988 much attention has been focused on stem cell therapy and its potential applications. Stem cells are “naïve” cells – capable with the right stimuli to transform into other cells types found in the human body e.g. liver, skin, red blood cells. Umbilical cord blood stem cells are one of the most primitive types of cells in the body. Created during the earliest phases of development they have the potential, given the right stimuli, to become specialised cells such as red or white blood cells. It is these properties and the fact that the umbilical cord is a rich source of stem cells that has prompted private companies to offer frozen storage of these cells from umbilical cord blood collected at birth. The umbilical cord bloods are stored by freezing the cells in liquid nitrogen, which allows preservation of the

Stem Cell Therapy and Coronavirus

Image
Chris Centeno, MD - This morning I was catching up on some emails from last week and one sent by a colleague was VERY concerning. A skin care clinic offering stem cell treatments for COVID-19! So let’s dig in… Stem Cells and Coronavirus There was a stem cell COVID-19 paper placed online last week that was not yet published nor peer-reviewed that I covered on this blog (1).  It was an interesting case report of an elderly woman in Wuhan, China (the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak) who was on her death bed in the ICU. They gave her an infusion of culture-expanded MSCs derived from umbilical cords and she quickly recovered. In that blog, I made it VERY CLEAR that these cells were not available here in the US for clinical use. Why? I knew that chiro, cosmetic, and alternative health clinics would soon be offering COVID-19 treatments based on this paper and claiming that the dead cells they use are the same as the live cells used in this paper. Well, we’re there already! The A

Updated: WHO Now Doesn't Recommend Avoiding Ibuprofen For COVID-19 Symptoms

Image
Editor's note (19 March 2020): Since the publication of this article, the World Health Organization has updated its advice on the official Twitter account : "Based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend against the use of ibuprofen." In light of this, the headline of this article has been changed to reflect the current advice. The original news text, provided by the news wire service AFP, remains below. Original (18 March 2020): The World Health Organization recommended Tuesday that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus. The warning by French Health Minister Olivier Veran followed a recent study in The Lancet medical journal that hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections. Asked about the study, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters

Sleep Apnea Guide - What Is It and How You Can Treat It in Malaysia (2020)

Image
A common but potentially serious sleep disorder, sleep apnea can lead to various complications if left untreated. Breathing might stop during sleep cycles, often several dozen times a night, sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, headaches, diabetes, weight gain, depression, dangerous levels of daytime drowsiness, and even heart disease and stroke, making it crucial to both diagnose and treat sleep apnea appropriately. What Is Sleep Apnea? There are two distinct types of sleep apnea that affect individuals.  The first, more common form of the sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) , occurs when the muscles of the throat relax too much during sleep, resulting in the obstruction of airways. As these airways close, the body and brain will have lack of oxygen until the body’s autonomic response is to wake up partially in order to clear the obstruction. The second type of sleep apnea, known as central sleep apnea, is neurological in nature. A condition where the brain

Listing of Diseases Treated with Stem Cells: Parent's Guide to Cord Blood

Image
Diseases treated with cord blood can be divided into 2 categories: Proven Standard Therapies Therapies in Clinical Trials Before choosing the right form of cord blood banking it is also important to distinguish between two modes of treatment: Allogeneic - patient receives stem cells from a matching donor, either a sibling or an unrelated donor Autologous - patient receives their own stem cells When parents donate cord blood to a public bank, they are supporting patients around the world who are searching for an unrelated Allogeneic donor. When parents save cord blood in a family bank, they are reserving the options that the baby can use its own stem cells for an Autologous treatment, or an immediate relative (sibling or parents) can use the stem cells for an Allogeneic treatment. Standard Therapies with blood-forming stem cells These are diseases for which transplants of blood-forming stem cells (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants, HSCT) are a standard treatment. F
