The overall cost of living has gone up in Malaysia or is it because the value of the 'ringgit' has gone down in value?

Thankfully, the cost of giving birth in government-owned hospitals and clinics is still affordable.

Although the numbers and statistics are everywhere on the internet, we have compiled and organised the costs related to giving birth accordingly (by hospital) in one place. The pricing information below is based on the published prices from major centers and pricing information available on blogs and the internet.

How Much Are The Costs Throughout Your Pregnancy Period?

The check-ups or consultation visits during the pregnancy period, or the ante-natal visits (as what the doctors would call it) at the government clinics are free. You may be referred to the specialist clinics if your midwife or your doctor require you to do so, due to some associated risk factors that you may have. 

 At the private side (private clinics and private hospitals), your consultation may cost from RM 50 - RM 150 depending on the specialists (obstetricians). An ultrasound scan may cost you an additional RM 60 to RM 120 depending on the types of scan. Visits may be monthly or less depending on your case.

Note:

  • Vaccines given at government health facilities:
  • Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG), vaccine that gives protection against tuberculosis
  • DTaP is the combination of diphtheria(D), tetanus(T) and accelullar pertussis(aP)
  • DT is a booster dose which protects against diphtheria (D) and tetanus (T)
  • Hib is Haemophilus Influenza type B
  • MMR is the combination of Measles(M), Mumps(M) and Rubella(R)
  • MR vaccine provides protection against Measles (M) and Rubella (R). MR Dose 2 at 7 years old, until year 2022
  • JE is vaccine against Japanese Encephalitis. This vaccine is only provided in Sarawak
  • HPV is Human Papillomavirus. This vaccine is provided only for girls aged 13 years. Dose 2 is given 6 months after dose 1
