An essential dietary mineral, it is a required mineral co-factor in over 300 enzymes in the body. Since over 68% of Americans are magnesium deficient, this would be a good mineral to start consuming.
1. Hype Around Magnesium Vitamins?
Any thoughts on the validity of this hype?
a. angelicasinensis
Magnesium is absolutely NOT a hype, it’s a mineral that our bodies need. I finally started taking magnesium religiously everyday and my migraines have disappeared and I am feeling a lot better.
b. crazyHormonesLady
Definitely not hype. Most people are actually magnesium deficient due to modern diets, coffee, tea, alcohol, and mineral depletion of our soil. It can help anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and muscle pain. I take Magnesium Glycinate as it is more absorbable and does not causes GI upset like the citrate version.

If you’re a weightlifter or bodybuilder. Magnesium is like magic. Aids in muscle recovery, prevents muscle cramps, and helps with sleep. I take 350mg pre workout and 350mg before bed
d. stojpo
Magnesium really helped with me with insomnia, anxiety and heart palpitations. I thought I was having a heart attack more than once and even saw a cardiologist. It’s my must have supplement. Do research on the different type’s because they all work differently. 100% recommend.
2. Advice on What Type of Magnesium
Currently on doctor’s advice I’m taking prescribed Vitamin D as I have low Vit D levels. Also been prescribed Folic acid due to folate levels. I’m wondering whether to take Magnesium, yet are various types which I’m unsure of. Any advice would be appreciated.

- Malate (150mg) and Orotate (32mg) in the morning, an hour before workout. Helps with energy and mental fatigue.
- Taurate (112mg) and Mag-Glycinate (100mg), and sometimes I’ll add an extra Taurate for sleep.
- Citrate gives me the runs. Very good for constipation.
- Oxide does nothing. L-Threonate had no noticeable effect on anything (other than my wallet).
Each form has it’s benefits and I think this stack does the job for me.
b. elijahdotyea
Took L-threonate for a year. I ended up feeling dependent on it, and felt real slow if I forgot to take it. Switched to Magnesium Glycinate and it's been much better, probably bc it doesn't cross the BBB.
c. Jackson3125
I take Glycinate because it is the form that supposedly helps with sleep the most. Don’t take too much though or you will have some digestive issues.
d. EMarieHasADHD
Malate is good for energy (my favorite). Taurate is great for heart health and anxiety (2nd favorite). Orotate is good too. I take all 3 throughout the day. People can react differently to different forms, though. Try one and see how it goes. You can try a different form if you don’t like it.

3. Does the type of Magnesium matter? In my experience yes.
So i was supplementing with magnesium oxide which i knew was said to be unabsorbable but it made a positive impact in my life and i could notice when i skipped doses of it something felt missing.
... tried these forms:
Citrate: Once you get used to the laxative effect by titrating up, you can get to pretty high doses (for me it was up to 1 gram of elemental magnesium which is found in 6200mg of Citrate. It's cheap, and i definitely noticed an improvement in my performance when i switched from Oxide to Citrate.
Magnesium Bisglycinate: Game changer. It sucks that it is only 14% elemental magnesium by weight because it can get pricey if you wanna get your entire gram of elemental magnesium from it, but i would think that would be worth it if you don't get zombied out by the glycine. I have not yet fully tried to get the full gram from it because pricing is a bitch like i said but even just taking 1200mg of glycinate which accounts for ~168mg of my total elemental magnesium and getting the rest from citrate has been a game changer. Honestly it did make me want caffeine cause i was so god damn calm but it improved mental performance noticeably.
L-threonate is expensive so i havent tried it but i heard a lot of it is bunk even the overpriced ones so i never bothered trying it.
Would be curious to hear some experiences regarding magnesium for mental performance.
a. Thurien
Magnesium L-Threonate has been one of the most useful supplements I've taken. It helps calm my sensitive nervous system down enough to lead a productive and meaningful life. I take it in the morning, afternoon and at night. Glycinate is also nice, but only for sleep.
b. oxide-NL
Most magnesium types didn't do much for me
Until I met Magnesium glycerophosphate now that has been a game changer for me (in combination with Vit B6/12 and D) My stomach tolerates it very well.
Dropped my resting heart-rate from high 90 to low 70 avg, palpitations I had are also gone.
I also had something weird, kinda POTS like but less severe. When I stood up quickly I would feel dizzy and my heart rate would go sky high. Guess what! That's also gone
I seem to manage stress better and the occasional panic attacks are completely gone.
Also for as long as I remember I had cramps in my leg at night, that also went away.
Been using it for more than a year now, I take it in the morning and early evening.
c. AM_OR_FA_TI
Personally a plain magnesium complex works best for me. It’s a combination of magnesium oxide, magnesium aspartate and magnesium citrate.
Magnesium glycinate does nothing for my muscles or musculoskeletal system, which was the reason I started magnesium years ago.
4. Best Magnesium Brand
Hi guys,
what is your favorite Magnesium brand and type? Trying to find one to sleep well.
Thanks for your help!
a. rachs1988
In the morning, I use Jigsaw Health MagSRT, a time-release form of magnesium malate. The formula is meant to be gentler on the stomach. In the evening, I use Thorne magnesium bisglycinate powder to help with sleep.
You certainly don’t have to use more than one form - it’s a personal choice because I like the benefits of each.

So I’m taking magnesium glycinate chelates by doctors best but I’ve heard they got bought by a Chinese company or something like that so what other brand is good that isn’t too expensive?

2. Magnesium Recommended Dose
The recommended dietary allowance for magnesium is 310 to 420 mg per day depending on your age and sex, but many experts believe you may need 600 to 900 mg per day, which is more in line with the magnesium uptake during the Paleolithic period. As noted in Open Heart:
“Investigations of the macro- and micro-nutrient supply in Paleolithic nutrition of the former hunter/gatherer societies showed a magnesium uptake with the usual diet of about 600 mg magnesium/day …
This means our metabolism is best adapted to a high magnesium intake … In developed countries, the average intake of magnesium is slightly over 4 mg/kg/day … [T]he average intake of magnesium in the USA is around 228 mg/day in women and 266mg/day in men …”
The key to effectively using higher doses, however, is to make sure you avoid loose bowels as that will disrupt your gut microbiome, which would be highly counterproductive.
Magnesium Dose for Kids
> Toddlers (1 to 3 years old) – 80mg> Kids (4 to 8 years old) – 130 mg
> Kids (9 to 12 years old) – 240mg
3. Signs of Magnesium Deficiency
Along with the measurement, you should track signs and symptoms of magnesium deficiency, such as..- Muscle spasms, especially “charley horses” or spasms in your calf muscle that happen when you stretch your leg, and/or eye twitches
- Numbness or tingling in your extremities
- Insulin resistance
- High blood pressure, heart arrhythmias and/or coronary spasms
- Increased number of headaches and/or migraines
- Low energy, fatigue and/or loss of appetite
The Trousseau sign — To check for this sign, a blood pressure cuff is inflated around your arm. The pressure should be greater than your systolic blood pressure and maintained for three minutes. By occluding the brachial artery in your arm, spasms in your hand and forearm muscles are induced. If you are magnesium deficient, the lack of blood flow will cause your wrist and metacarpophalangeal joint to flex and your fingers to adduct.
