Best Supplements for PMS Mood Swings 2025

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects up to 75% of women, with mood swings being one of the most disruptive symptoms. From sudden irritability to overwhelming anxiety and depressive lows, these emotional fluctuations can disrupt daily life—but the right supplements can help.

Are PMS Mood Swings Real? The Science Says Yes

Research confirms that PMS mood disturbances are far more than "just hormones." A study of 328 women (16-35 years old) found:

- 67.4% experienced PMS
- 25.6% met criteria for PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)
- Mood swings overlapped with anger, irritability, and depression

Contributing Factors of PMS Mood Swings
✔ Hormonal shifts (estrogen & progesterone fluctuations)
✔ Neurotransmitter sensitivity (serotonin & GABA imbalances)
✔ Genetic predisposition (family history of mood disorders)
✔ Lifestyle triggers (stress, poor sleep, diet)

Supplements for PMS Mood Swings

While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, certain supplements have shown promise in alleviating PMS mood swings..

a. Calcium
A double-blind randomized clinical trial involving female students diagnosed with PMS received 500 mg of calcium daily or a placebo for two months.

Results shows calcium supplements help reduce PMS symptoms, including mood swings, by showing significant improvements in various mood-related symptoms in the calcium group.

b. Magnesium
A study of 32 women with PMS assessed the effects of oral magnesium supplementation. Participants took either 360 mg of magnesium or a placebo daily for two cycles.

The study found that magnesium significantly reduced mood-related symptoms and increased magnesium levels in certain cells, suggesting it could effectively treat premenstrual mood changes.

c. Vitamin B6
Studies have shown that vitamin B6 can significantly reduce PMS mood symptoms. Maroofi et al. found that 40 mg daily reduced mood symptoms, and Salehi and Salehi found that 200 mg daily decreased depression, anxiety, and other symptoms.

d. Chasteberry
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 170 women found that daily agnus castus (Vitex agnus castus) extract significantly improved PMS symptoms, including mood swings, irritability, and anger, over three menstrual cycles compared to a placebo

I’ve been delayed on my period for some time now. Last time it took me 2 months until I got my period.
My mood swings were going crazy. My acne kicked in. My period was mad heavy and so we’re the cramps.

I started taking this a month ago and my period came basically on time! I felt no cramps. No sore breasts. Like they were mildly there but barely anything at all. I’m bloated though. But that’s just me. I still have energy even when I’m on my period.

And the price is really good compared to so many other ones I’ve bought. I bought the same 30 day supply from another brand I did like, for $30. And this does the same exact as that brand did.

I’m very impressed. My mood swings are basically gone. I am just a very emotional person as is, but these made me less crazy and my boyfriend agrees lol. Will definitely be buying these again.

I am allergic to birth control, and most medication. So I had to get the copper IUD. It’s great! But it makes my periods intense and the mood swings brutal! Everyone was saying I was becoming evil (PMDD).

I found these on amazon and another women said they helped with her IUD symptoms as well. I got these at the first of the month, and my period was the third week. I took two a day as described and I honestly have never felt better.

To begin with the pills are vegan, and contain nothing I am allergic too! Plus they’re all natural herbs which my body responds too as well. They’ve helped my PMS/ PMDD tremendously and my family and friends even agree. Now I will say it doesn’t “cure” all PMS symptoms. I still have cramps, acne, and back aches. The usual. But my mood? Is beyond better! Thank you for these!!!
