Having a baby in Singapore without private health insurance
Jan 23, 2012 - As far as I'm concerned BUPA covers everything. At the National University Hospital we haven't had any problems with BUPA. NUH is not a private hospital, but the care is really good and you can still choose you own private obstetrician. The costs will be lower than in the private hospitals too. Just a few obs to mention: Prof Biswas, prof Mary Rauff. Good luck and do inform yourself a lot! The most important things for birth are preparation, education and support; choose the people you feel most safe and confident with!

Jan 12, 2010 - ...We did not bring our health cover with us but asked for work to cover the cost of the birth..I stayed in the national university hospital for 7 days with 2 children delivered by section and all up a cost Sing $13500. We have never taken out health insurance as work covers the big stuff should it ever happen and a stay in hospital in private ward over night is about $350...

EMMa Care – Wonderful Midwives at NUH
Oct 2013 - This wonderful service is offered by 3 young, enthusiastic and committed midwives at the National University Hospital in Singapore. I learned about them when I went to see Dr. YS Chong and was discussing delivery techniques. When I expressed interest for a natural delivery and perhaps a water birth, he immediately said that he would only do this if I was to sign up with the EMMa care service. It sort of made sense because natural deliveries can take a very long time and if I wanted to go drug free, then presumably I would require a lot of support. He advised that I speak to the midwives, whose tiny office was right outside his clinic (this gave me great confidence that they work closely with him as a team).

Nov 2013 - NUH midwife scheme helps with unassisted births: $1,450 for the full package.

Expectant mothers who sign up for an optional midwife scheme at the National University Hospital (NUH) seem to have a better chance of giving birth unassisted. This is according to a study by NUH on its Enhanced Midwifery Maternity Care (EMMa Care), which was set up two years ago and costs $1,450 for the full package.

June 2013 - Midwifery in Singapore: The EMMa Care Programme
In Singapore, obstetricians provide most prenatal care. In 2011, the National University Hospital (NUH) introduced Enhanced Midwifery Maternity Care (EMMa Care), giving mothers greater access to midwives, and another option for prenatal care. We find out more about this from the programme’s lead midwife, and fron a mother who chose the EMMa Care route when she was pregnant.
