Kidney Transplant Malaysia: Cost and Kidney Transplant Centers
Kidney transplantation is the best option for the majority of patients with end-stage renal disease as it provides the patient the best quality of life and improves survival. However, it may be limited by the presence of suitable living donors, the availability of deceased donors and other conditions of the recipients. The donor and the recipient can function with one kidney and neither requires dialysis after a successful transplantation.
Although kidney transplants have been done in the country for the last 40 years, the transplant rate in Malaysia is among the lowest not only in the world but in Asean countries as well. Due to the long waiting list, many Malaysian patients do opt for transplants illegally abroad which is dangerous as the post-transplant management would be more complicated.
A review and cost analysis of kidney transplants in Malaysia was published in Transplant Direct in 2015:
In adults, discounted cost per LY (life year) was Malaysian Ringgit [RM]29,482 and RM45,234 for living-donor kidney transplant (LKT) and deceased donor kidney transplant (DKT), respectively, whereas in children, it was RM35 905 and RM51 317), respectively. Total lifetime discounted costs of adult transplants were RM409 921 for LKT, RM503 922 for DKT. Total costs for paediatric transplants were RM530 252 and RM545 566 for the 2 categories respectively.
