10 Best NMN Supplements (2023 Review)

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide and is a precursor to NAD+, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. NMN is the direct precursor of the essential molecule nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and is considered a key component to increase NAD+ levels in cells. NAD+ is a critical molecule found in every cell of your body, but levels of NAD+ naturally fall with age, making it — and NMN, as a result — crucial.

NMN is one of the most popular supplements in the anti aging community. The NAD story took off toward the end of 2013 with a high-profile paper by Harvard's David Sinclair and colleagues. Sinclair, recall, achieved fame in the mid-2000s for research on yeast and mice that suggested the red wine ingredient resveratrol mimics anti-aging effects of calorie restriction. This time his lab made headlines by reporting that the mitochondria in muscles of elderly mice were restored to a youthful state after just a week of injections with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a molecule that naturally occurs in cells and, like NR, boosts levels of NAD.

However, NMN is like a large bed that movers are trying to get through a door: It doesn’t enter the cell easily. One way for NMN to enter the cell is for it to chemically transform into another molecule (called nicotinamide riboside, or NR) before it can enter the cell. NR has earned a name for itself as a highly efficient precursor to NAD+ and can enter the cell as is. NMN, meanwhile, sometimes becomes NR before entering the cell, where it chemically transforms back to NMN and then ultimately becomes NAD+.

We've learned that NR leads to NAD+ and that it also has its own pathway that bypasses various steps other NAD+ precursors have to take. In early 2019, though, new research revealed NMN might only have to become NR for certain cell types, as NMN can enter cells in the small intestine of mice. It’s unclear whether or how this will translate to humans.

To reduce the confusion, do note that NR, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), Niacin (NA) and Niacinamide (NAM) are all NAD precursors, meaning all these precursors will be transformed into NAD. That said, each precursor has it's own different pathway that will lead to NAD.

What Does NMN Supplement Do?

In numerous studies (2020), supplementation with NMN has increased NAD+ biosynthesis, suppressed age-related adipose tissue inflammation, enhanced insulin secretion and insulin action, improved mitochondrial function, improved neuronal function in the brain, and more. Here, we look at the science behind NMN, its stability, possible pharmacokinetics, transport, function, and ability to induce biosynthesis of NAD+. Supplementing NMN may be an effective nutraceutical anti-aging intervention, with beneficial effects on a wide array of physiological functions.

Can NMN truly reverse aging? In a 2013 Harvard study, the Harvard scientists observed that “NMN was able to mitigate most age-related declines in mice,” and that “treatment of old mice with NMN reversed all of these biochemical aspects of aging.” The study concluded that “enhancing NAD+ biosynthesis by using NAD+ intermediates, such as NMN and NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), is expected to ameliorate age-associated physiological decline”.

This has precipitated dozens of studies since that are focused on investigating NMN supplementation to treat cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, life extension, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many more.

A 2022 study on human subjects concluded that Oral Administration of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) Is Safe and Efficiently Increases Blood Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) Levels.

ProHealth Longevity NMN Pro Review:
"Uthever’s research team is led by U.S. doctors from the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. This NMN is tested both in-house by Uthever and then batch-tested again by ProHealth to verify authenticity and purity.
Painstaking attention to quality and purity has led to findings that ProHealth NMN remains intact and stable for up to two years. Pro 300 gets rave reviews, often beating popular products like Genex. Pay attention to price, however, as I’ve seen it fluctuate by nearly $50. I’ve also noticed that there isn’t a GMP-certified logo on the bottle itself. If you want a shelf-stable NMN that lasts, ProHealth Pro 300 is a top choice." -

2. Double Wood NMN Supplement

Ratings: 4.6 out of 5 - more than 1,500 global ratings

Amazon Best Sellers: #17 in Vitamin B3 (Niacin) Supplements.

- Most generic NMN supplements degrade in less than two months and need to be kept refrigerated due to its short shelf life. Double Wood NMN is fully stabilized and do not need refrigeration. Their process of stabilization ensures that the NMN does not deactivate before it reaches your cells.
- Made in the USA
- GMO-Free

Double Wood NMN Supplement Reviews:

"I've been using resveratrol (Jeuness) for 3.5 years, resveratrol was discovered by Dr David Sinclair (Harvard Medical School) discovered in 1992. No longer get cold. However, I'm still get tired due to aging, I believe. And getting worse lately when I've been working hard. So I started looking and noticed Dr Sinclair's book titled Lifespan: Why We Age—and Why We Don't Have To. From which I learned NMN. Then I ordered 1 bottle of NMN (Underwood). I take 4 capsules per day. Label says you can take 2-8 pills. The first week I felt less tired, but wasn't so sure it is due to NMN or something else. The second week, I started running instead of walking, so even I'm shocked! I haven't felt so hungary and energetic for the past decade! So it has to be NMN that worked!!
While I continue using resveratrol at the same time, I feel NMN makes you feel much more energetic. Can't comment longevity yet, but possible, even with NMN." - Amazon.com

"If you can get past the old look, Double Wood Stabilized NMN is beloved by thousands. Each pill contains 125mg of NMN packed into a capsule made of gelatin.
Double Wood products are made, tested, and produced in a cGMP facility in New York.
This was once the cheapest option on the market at $19.99 per 60 capsules. It’s risen significantly since then and is no longer my favorite budget pick. I also don’t like that the ingredients list contains unnecessary Rice Flour. And the CoA listed online is from 2019. Buy Double Wood NMN when it’s on sale." - outliyr.com

Question: Nmn needs to be refrigerated and kept out of the light. true? typically how old is the product at shippment? thanks
Answer: NMN only needs to be refrigerated when mixed into a solution. I assume you heard Dr. Sinclair mention this and he was referring to his NMN / Walter solution he would give to mice. He was not talking about stabilized NMN powder. We have performed third party tests on this product 6-12 months after production showing it is stabilized and there is no break down in the molecule.

3. TRU Niagen NAD+ Booster Supplement

TRU Niagen NAD+ Supplement comes in 3 sizes:

Amazon Best Sellers: #1 in Vitamin B3 (Niacin) Supplements.

- Technically, Nicotinamide Riboside is not the same molecule as NMN but they are both NAD precursors and are categorised under Vitamin B3 (Niacin) supplements by Amazon.com. Since, TruNiagen is the #1 best seller, we have decided to feature them as part of the best 10 list.
- ChromaDex markets TruNiagen, which is based on its branded Niagen ingredient, which is a form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), the form of nicotinamide that actively crosses into the cell to participate in the NAD+ pathway (R).
- Reduces the cellular effects of aging by elevating NAD+, a key coenzyme your body uses for healthy cellular metabolism.
- Nicotinamide Riboside for Energy, Metabolism, Vitality, Muscle Health, Healthy Aging, Cellular Repair
- Unlike NMN, the key ingredient Niagen was successfully notified two times as an NDI (New Dietary Ingredient) and reviewed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) under the United States notification programs.
- There are many cheaper alternative sources to buy NMN today, but are you getting what you paid for? If the price for NMN is too good to be true, it probably is not NMN.

Tru Niagen Review
While this is not a scientific review I have been taking Niagen in one form or another non stop for several years. I have been gradually increasing my doses with what I can only describe as a profound effect. Without a doubt I feel younger than 46. I also think I look younger than most people my age. I certainly don't feel my age and have a ton of energy every single day. I also try to eat plenty of vegetables with lots of non meat proteins along with limited meat consumption. I am not a health nut but basically try to stay away excess sugars and processed foods whenever I can. I also do a hard bike ride once or twice a week. I think this also helps the entire aging process some.

- Toniiq products are produced in a GMP-certified and NSF-approved state-of-the-art manufacturing facility right here in the USA.

Toniiq NMN Review
I have been using Toniiq NMN along with Resveratrol for about 7 and a half months now. I started taking these for longevity purposes after reading about them in Lifespan. Unexpectedly, I started to see my male pattern baldness reversing about 4 months in; I was not expecting this. Based on the regrowth process speed, it appears I'll reverse 8 years of hair loss in less than a year! My barber is totally floored that hair follicles can come back to life. I can only assume the cells in the rest of my body are rejuvenating as well. I had been taking the NMN in pill form, but the powder seems to be a much better value. It has a slight tart flavor which I actually enjoy. I've only been using this new form for a short time, but I expect to continue to see the same results.

5. Toniiq NMN and Resveratrol Supplement (Best NMN and Resveratrol Supplement)

Elixr

Amazon Best Sellers: #11 in Resveratrol Nutritional Supplements.

Amazon Reviews: 4.3 out of 5 - more than 290 global ratings

- Toniiq products are produced in a GMP-certified and NSF-approved state-of-the-art manufacturing facility right here in the USA.
- Meet ELIXR, the First of Its Kind NMN and Resveratrol Combination - Toniiq set out to create one of the very first Resveratrol and NMN supplement capsules on the market; something that was impossible until very recently with breakthroughs in nicotinamide mononucleotide blending and stabilization technology.
- The Role of NAD+ and Sirtuins in Healthy Aging and Longevity - If the human body were a rocket ship, sirtuins (a type of protein involved in regulating essential biological processes) can be thought of as "mission control", while NAD+ (a critical coenzyme essential to the fueling a number of those functions) can be thought of as "fuel". Both work synergistically to support healthy aging.
- Resveratrol, NMN, and Trimethylglycine - Both nmn nicotinamide mononucleotide and resveratrol are being closely studied for their supporting effects on NAD+ and sirtuins respectively. Trimethylglycine has also been added to this formula at a 1:1 ratio to provide methylation support.

Important safety note: Resveratrol is not suitable for people undergoing blood-thinning medication.

6. Peak Performance NMN supplement + Resveratrol

peak performance nmn resveratrol

Amazon Best Sellers: #53 in Resveratrol Nutritional Supplements.

Ratings: 4.3 out of 5 - more than 100 global ratings

Not all NMN supplements are created equal! Many supplements come with just NMN, which by itself is less effective to produce higher levels of NAD which the body needs to prevent cellular degeneration as we age. Peak Performance combines NMN with Resveratrol. Resveratrol works synergistically with NMN as it acts as an accelerator to produce better results in DNA repair.
- Published in Pharmacology Research and Perspectives (2022), Jiang and colleagues from Macau University of Science and Technology in China demonstrated that combining NMN with resveratrol increases NAD+ levels in heart and skeletal muscle of mice significantly more than NMN alone.
- Anti Aging = NMN + Resveratrol! Our cells use NAD+ to produce energy and to activate proteins that repair damaged DNA. Scientists believe that the decline of NAD+ as we age results in many health-related problems. To sustain healthy levels of NAD+ we can supplement this with its precursor, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) . When combined with Resveratrol this supplement becomes even more powerful. Great for cellular + DNA repair, muscle endurance and strength, vascular health and blood flow.
- What's in your supplement? - Many supplements on the market use standard formulas that may contain cheap fillers and sometimes questionable ingredients. All of our ingredients are carefully chosen and 3rd party tested for purity.
- Vegan & Allergy Free - Free Of Soy, Milk, Egg, Shellfish, Corn, Wheat & Peanuts. Contains NO Gluten or Preservatives. Manufactured Under The Highest Quality GMP Regulations and USA Standards.

Important safety note: Resveratrol is not suitable for people undergoing blood-thinning medication.

7. Nutricost Niacinamide

Amazon Best Sellers: #2 in Vitamin B3 (Niacin) Supplements.

Ratings: 4.6 out of 5 - more than 13,000 global ratings

Do not confused with Nutricost Niacin. Niacin is the form that may cause 'Niacin Flush'. Niacinamide is the 'non-flush' form.

- Technically, Niacinamide is not the same molecule as NMN but they are both NAD precursors and are categorised under Vitamin B3 (Niacin) supplements by Amazon.com.
- Niacinamide is a popular form of Vitamin B3, but without the often uncomfortable feeling known as "Niacin Flush". Vitamin B3 is most often found in meats like tuna and beef. However, in order to get a similar amount of Vitamin B3, you would have to eat large amounts of tuna and beef or other sources containing Vitamin B3.
- Technically, Niacinamide is not the same molecule as NMN but they are both NAD precursors and are categorised under Vitamin B3 (Niacin) supplements by Amazon.com. Since, Niacinamide is the #2 best seller under this category, we have decided to feature them as part of the best 10 list.
- 240 Capsules of Niacinamide Per bottle / 1 Capsule per serving
- 500mg of Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) Per Capsule
- No "Niacin Flush"
- Non-GMO, Gluten Free, Soy Free, and Made in a GMP Compliant, FDA Registered Facility

Nutricost Niacinamide Review
After a recent news article about this being a favorite supplement in Australia for sun damage protection, I asked my dermatologist about it. She said it might help prevent me getting as many 'barnacles' as she calls them. You know, those nasty, old-age, sun-damage, crunchy brown or white patches all over your body. (I have many). I'm still on my first bottle but after about two weeks the most amazing thing happened. I happened to scratch an area near one of my barnacles and it just flaked off in my hand. Since then, many more have succumbed. Not all; just some. But I'm happy. Even one less of those ugly bumps is an improvement.

Niacinamide Review
Dr. Conlon has concluded, and Dr Mercola thoroughly agree with her, that the best single NAD+ precursor is niacinamide (also known as nicotinamide), not niacin, NR or NMN. It is now beyond obvious to me why no one is promoting niacinamide. This is because it costs less than one cent a day and as a result there is simply no money to be made in promoting it. Ideally you buy niacinamide powder and use 1 to 1/2 of 1/64th of a teaspoon three times a day (25-50 mg). - Mercola.com.

Review - My husband and I are in our 60s and have been taking these capsules for a few weeks. We both started with 2 capsules daily and experienced an increase in energy and in focus. We also both had trouble remaining asleep at night and had strange dreams. We have decreased our consumption of the capsules to one per day and have had a resolution to the sleep problems. We both continue to enjoy an increase in energy and in focus. We have reordered this Thorne product and are very satisfied with the results. It would be best to start with one capsule per day and work up from there until you find your own correct dosage.

Important safety note: Resveratrol is not suitable for people undergoing blood-thinning medication.

This product is probably about as close as you can get to the niagen supplements, like Thorne ResveraCel, without actually containing niagen or using the patented process. Nicotinamide is a form of niacin easily processed by the body. And it contains bonus resveratrol. I've only been taking these two weeks, but I've found these supplements give me some mental boost/clarity and physical energy. My skin seems more elastic. I have less appetite (my usual tendency is to over eat) and sleep better. I've lost a couple of pounds. One side effect I get is upset stomach, but the seller/manufacturer claims this will go away with time. Overall, while these supplements are no "miracle cure," I think they are providing some benefit, and I will continue to take them. I'll reevaluate once I've made it through the first bottle.
TWO MONTH UPDATE: I still feel that I am benefiting from this product. Stomach upset has diminished. I have less joint pain. I have more energy and mental clarity. Better sleep. Skin feels younger. No additional weight loss.

Important safety note: Resveratrol is not suitable for people undergoing blood-thinning medication.

Chromadex NMN Supplement Test Report: 64% of NMN Supplements Fail Tests

ChromaDex NMN Report (Oct 2021): Supplement manufacturer ChromaDex alleges that testing has revealed that more than half of NMN anti aging supplements being sold on Amazon contained almost none of the bioactive molecule.

ChromaDex markets TruNiagen, which is based on its branded Niagen ingredient, which is a form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), the form of nicotinamide that actively crosses into the cell to participate in the NAD+ pathway. Boosting this pathway, and thus maintaining cellular function at a lively, youthful level, has become a prominent theme in recent anti aging research.

Credit: ChromaDex

* The same distributor (SerumLab S&C International LLC) was listed on the product packaging from 10 of the 22 product brands.

Some researchers have argued that a transporter exists for NMN too, which is something that ChromaDex disputes. It claims that NMN must first be converted into NR in the blood before it can be used by the cells.

In the several years since the NMN transporter discovery was asserted, the NAD+ anti aging field has become crowded with NMN based supplements all seeking a piece of the pie created by ChromaDex and its competitor and one time customer Elysium. (The two companies have been locked in various patent infringement and breach of contract suits for several years.)

Last fall, ChromaDex obtained 22 samples of NMN products being sold on Amazon. Of these, 14 claimed to contain 500 mg of NMN. A further two products claimed 300 mg on the label; five claimed 250 mg and one product claimed 125 mg.

Only one of the 500 mg products came close to meeting label claim. It had 456 mg of NMN. All of the other 13 products in the 500 mg group either came in at below reporting limit (BRL, defined as less than 1% of the stated amount) or, in the case of 3 products, no NMN was detected at all.

Almost all of the rest of the products performed better, having at least 88% of the label claim. A lone 250 mg product was identified as BRL.

In summary, ChromaDex said that 64% of the products tested contained less than 1% of the stated amount of the active ingredient, which should give consumers pause, the company said.

"While this is a limited snapshot of the vast NMN finished product landscape, it does provide a glimpse into the high variability of product quality that is available... According to this study, the majority of the products one might purchase online contain such a small amount of NMN that there would be no clinical benefits achieved from the dose. Another concern with these adulterated products is that the actual contents are not known and could pose a risk to the user," the company said in a statement.

Editor's Note: In February 2022, another third-party investigation uncovered tens of thousands of fake supplements sold on Amazon. Many of these included NMN.

David Sinclair Supplements List

Keep in mind that to date, Dr. David Sinclair has made a point to not promote or endorse any supplement products. We compiled this list from interviews and books in which Professor David Sinclair mentions supplements he takes.

We don’t know if he still takes these supplements, or whether he takes additional supplements that are not included on this list.

For example, in his book Lifespan, he mentions on page 304 that he takes NMN and resveratrol every morning, often mixed in his yogurt.

Here is the summary list:
  1. Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), 1g per day, in the morning
  2. Quercetin and fisetin, 500 mg each, once per day, in the morning
  3. Resveratrol, 1g per day, in the morning
  4. Vitamin D3 and K2
  5. Spermidine, 1 mg per day, in the morning
  6. Metformin (prescription drug) 1 gram per day: 500 mg in the morning and 500 mg in the evening
  7. Statin (prescription drug) – taken since his early 20s due to family history of cardiovascular disease
  8. Low-dose aspirin – 83 mg per day
  9. Alpha lipoic Acid
  10. Coenzyme Q10

NR vs NMN Molecule

Pitting NR vs NMN against each other is, for now, somewhat of a moot point because the two molecules have never been studied side by side in humans. The biggest, and most obvious, difference between NMN and NR is size. NMN is simply larger than NR, meaning it often needs to be broken down to fit into the cell. NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), when compared to other NAD+ precursors (like nicotinic acid or nicotinamide) reigns supreme in efficiency.

But give NMN a new door, one it can fit through, and it’s a whole new game. This is where cellular transporters come into play. Transporters are proteins that are doors on the cell; they allow molecules to enter the cell without needing to chemically transform.

Research from Shin-ichiro Imai, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of developmental biology at Washington University in St. Louis, identified a transporter that allows NMN to get into the cell without converting to NR. The catch? The transporter is only on cells located in the gut of mice and only works in the presence of sodium ions. NR, however, has been shown to enter cells in the liver, muscle, and brain tissue of mouse models. To date there is not yet evidence that these mouse studies can be extrapolated to humans. But again, the two have never been matched up against each other in a way that can truly identify one as superior to the other.

As research grows, it is likely to become clearer that NMN and NR may have differing benefits depending on the part of the body and their use. Where NMN transporters are found, they could make one more preferable over the other. NMN has also been found to improve insulin activity and production which could help to accelerate metabolisms and make the body more glucose tolerant.

Stability and storage of NMN and NR

A stability analysis demonstrates NR is stable (does not undergo degradation) for up to six hours at room temperature and seven days at two to eight degrees Celsius. Regarding stability of NMN and NR, David Sinclair, PhD, A.O. of Harvard University says, “Make sure your NR and NMN is kept in the cold. If it’s just on the shelf and it’s not in a stabilized form, then it will degrade to nicotinamide, which is something you don’t want to take high doses of because we’ve shown in my lab many years ago that nicotinamide will inhibit the sirtuins, and PARP as well, and interfere with DNA repair.”

What Foods Contain NMN?

NMN is available in vegetables (broccoli and cabbage), avocado, mushrooms, meat, and shrimp but trying to obtain sufficient through diet alone would be problematic. Studies dosages have been about 50mg - 250mg and suggested that a 150 pound (68kg) human would require about 560mg per day. The difficulty is that you would have to eat about 100 pounds of edamame, 1,800 pounds of broccoli, or similarly impossible amounts of cucumber, cabbage, avocado, tomato, mushrooms, raw beef, or shrimp.
