Best Vitamin C Powder For Face 2023

What Does Vitamin C Do For Skin?

Vitamin C is found at high levels in the epidermis (outer layer of skin) as well as the dermis (inner layer of skin). Its cancer-fighting (antioxidant) properties, and its role in collagen production help keep your skin healthy. This is why vitamin C is one of the key ingredients found in many antiaging skin care products.

Vitamin C for Collagen Synthesis

Vitamin C is important for the formation of collagen. Collagen is a protein that makes up more than 70 percent of the dry weight of your skin. Collagen can also improve skin elasticity, reduce visible wrinkles, tooth health and increase blood flow to the skin. Therefore, collagen helps to heal damaged skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Adequate vitamin C intake can also help repair and prevent dry skin. An article published in Indian Dermatology Online Journal states that, when applied topically, vitamin C can reverse the signs of photoaging like hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin C Protects From Sun

Vitamin C is also an essential part of the skin’s defense system. Your skin cells use this vitamin to protect from stress caused by pollution, smoking, and UV rays. It’s actively transported to the skin, where it can act as an antioxidant and help strengthen the skin’s barriers (ScienceDirect).

Taking vitamin C orally can enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens applied to your skin for protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It does this by decreasing cell damage and helping the healing process of bodily wounds. Studies have also shown that taking vitamin C may shorten the time needed for wounds to heal. (PubMedPubMed).

Best Vitamin C Powder for Face 2022

1. The Ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder (20g)

vitamin c powder for skin whitening

A high concentration of Vitamin C in powder form that works to brighten the skin and reduce the visible signs of ageing skin, especially hyperpigmentation. Perfect for dull and uneven skin tone.

This formula offers a very fine L-Ascorbic Acid powder that visibly targets the appearance of uneven skin tone, dullness, and signs of aging and is formulated to be mixed with other treatments (except those containing Niacinamide or EUK 134).

The format of this formula is a very fine, anhydrous, L-Ascorbic Acid powder and, as such, provides the most direct exposure of extremely high concentrations of Vitamin C topically. With such format, a very strong tingling but non-irritating sensation is expected during the first 1-2 weeks of use until the skin's tolerance to such high exposure is elevated.

It should be noted that Vitamin C topical treatments should not be applied in conjunction with EUK 134 or Niacinamide, ideally EUK 134/Niacinamide in the AM and Vitamin C in the PM. This is because EUK 134/Niacinamide can affect the quality of Vitamin C.

How To Take Vitamin C Powder
Mix a small amount with other treatments in the palm of your hand and apply to face in the AM or the PM. Avoid contact with the eyes. A tingling sensation can be expected after application. Do not mix with formulations containing Niacinamide or EUK 134. If irritation occurs, cease use and consult a physician. Use only as directed on unbroken skin. Patch testing prior to use is advised. Keep out of reach of children.

I mix my L-Ascorbic Acid with rosewater and then top it with The Ordinary Rose Hip Seed Oil to seal it in and prevent it oxidizing. It made a huge difference to my acne when I started it. It feels like it’s mildly exfoliating.

I've purchased several boxes of this cleanser... it really does help to brighten and reduce dark spots. I also like how the powder texture exfoliates a bit as it's going from powder to creamy soap. Definitely recommend!

I've been using this serum morning and night for 5 months. My skin looks smoother and less pigmented.

Make sure to keep it in the dark once mixed to slow the oxidation process. I use a dark glass bottle which I store in a drawer and have had it still good at 3 weeks when I finished it off. Haven't used any other brand yet, but will update when I have. Still have a lot left in this container. I am up to a 15% serum solution now, but started at a 5% to get my skin adjusted. I have given myself a chemical burn with citric acid not properly diluted and it is possible to do the same with this. Do your research and know your skin.

FAQ

1. How To Choose The Right Vitamin C

Selecting the right vitamin C supplement depends on a variety of factors, including the form, quality, dose, and price.

a. Form

You can start by considering how you’ll be using the supplement. For instance, if you prefer to take a pill, you’ll want to check out encapsulated vitamin C supplements. If you don’t like swallowing pills or want to mix it into beverages, your best bet is to consider liquid or powdered supplements.

b. Quality

Evaluate whether a brand is reputable by exploring their ingredient sourcing and manufacturing standards. A good product will also be tested by third-party organizations, such as USP, Consumer Labs, or NSF International.

Take a look at added ingredients, too. If you’re trying to limit your intake of added sugars, you want to opt for a supplement that doesn’t contain sugar.

c. Dosage

The recommended daily amount of vitamin C for adults is 90 mg for men, 75 mg for women, and up to 120 mg for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. However, certain medical conditions may require that you take much higher doses (NIH).

Children have lower vitamin C requirements, which range from 25–75mg per day, depending on their age. However, it’s not generally advised to give children a vitamin C supplement unless their pediatrician has recommended it.

How Much Vitamin C Is Too Much?

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for vitamin C for men, as well as women ages 19 and above, is 2,000 mg. Meanwhile, the UL for children ranges from 400–1,800 mg, depending on age. Daily intakes at or below these amounts are unlikely to result in any adverse health effects (NIH).

Generally, high doses of vitamin C are unnecessary and could contribute to harmful side effects. Only consume high doses if your healthcare provider recommends doing so.

d. Budget

Some professional-grade brands can be expensive, but keep in mind that a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean a better product. There are plenty of high quality options available at various price points.

2. Organic Vitamin C vs Synthetic Vitamin C

Organic Vitamin C is the whole food vitamin C that occurs in its natural state. Vitamin C in this form contains bioflavonoids. Synthetic vitamin C is an isolated version of vitamin C. It is devoid of the micronutrients, dietary fiber and phytochemicals like bioflavonoids found in vitamin-rich wholefoods.

Bioflavonoids are antioxidants that enhance the use of vitamin C by improving its absorption and prolonging its effectiveness. Flavonoids themselves provide many health benefits. They are collectively referred to as "vitamin P" in recognition of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic properties.

3. Is Natural Vitamin C Better Than Synthetic?

Yes. Natural Vitamin C is less processed, more whole, more active, more readily absorbed, and less toxic than the synthetic isolate.

However, steady state comparative bioavailability studies in humans have shown no differences between synthetic and natural vitamin C, regardless of the subject population, study design or intervention used.
