Soy Milk Benefits and Side Effects 2022

Nowadays, the variety of nondairy milk available seems to be wider than ever. The original plant-based substitute, soy milk, is still popular, but you might be curious about how it compares to other well-liked nondairy milk options, such as almond, oat, and pistachio, and whether it's suitable for consumption by adults or babies. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Soy Milk?

Soy milk is made by combining soaked soybeans with water and the sediments are strained out to produce a smooth, milk-like liquid. Since soy formula is made with soy, it contains soy protein. The term “soy protein isolate” may appear on the ingredient list. These are the standard formulations, which include full-size soy proteins.

Both sweetened and unsweetened varieties are available.

Although some brands additionally include salt, vitamins, and/or minerals, the unsweetened variety typically solely contains pure water and soybeans.

A sweetener, typically cane sugar, is present in the sweetened variations. They frequently add oil, salt, and vanilla to give the food a flavor that is more like cow's milk. To give them a chocolate flavor, some versions additionally include cocoa.

Soy Milk Benefits

a. Soy for Lactose Intolerance
For people with lactose sensitivity, soy formulas are frequently advised. Lactose intolerance happens when you are unable to digest naturally occurring sugars in cow’s milk which might cause extreme irritability and gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea.

b. Nutrients in Soy Milk
Soy milk is fortified with some of the same micronutrients found in cow’s milk – such as calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, phosphorous, vitamin A, and vitamin B-12. Soy milk also has a comparable amount of protein as cow’s milk, but with very little saturated fat and no cholesterol.

c. Soy for Cow’s Milk Allergy
Soy-protein formulas are widely used for feeding children with CMA. Cow’s milk allergy is an adverse immune response associated with a clinical reaction due to the binding of specific immunoglobulin (IgE) to antigens/proteins in cow’s milk (IgE), which could induce an allergic reaction in sensitized individuals. It is the most common type of food allergy, affecting <2% of children under 4 years of age (Source

However, best consult a doctor first before taking soy formula because some infants with cow’s milk allergy also react to soy.

d, Soy for Lowering Blood Pressure
Consumption of soy milk has resulted in a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure compared with consumption of cow's milk. A study showed that soy milk consumption was associated with better blood pressure control among diabetic patients with nephropathy.

Long-Term Health Considerations

Natural components in soy milk slow the digestion of protein and carbohydrates and can impair the body's capacity to absorb other essential nutrients. Trypsin inhibitors, lectins, phytic acids, and indigestible oligosaccharides are some of these "anti-nutrients."

Soy milk's phytic acids can bind to iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, forming a complex that cannot be absorbed by the intestine and thus making them less bioavailable.

For instance, the calcium in soy milk is not as well absorbed as the calcium in cow's milk. However, there is no proof that consuming soy in moderation leads to deficiencies.

Long-Term Health Consideration For Children
Although a few studies on the safety of soy in young children have been conducted, long-term safety data are very limited. Furthermore, the protein may cause stomach pain, diarrhea, and a lack of bowel motions, among other things.

Because of the safety concerns around soy, pediatricians usually only recommend it for babies with medical issues or for cultural/religious reasons.

I've always bought Silk Original and was doubtful when ordering these, through amazon prime delivery, from Whole Foods. However, it's fine. A good replacement for when I can't get out to Stop&Shop.

I use this for everything. I cook with it, it goes into my coffee or latte, I bake with it. Almost everyone in my family is lactose intolerant and this product has the extra protein plus vitamin D and calcium. The only time it is not appropriate is if someone is on a medication or diet that does not allow soy, for example if someone is using letrozole to treat breast cancer because soy has phytoestrogens.

I think I've tried all the soy milks and now all the other kinds of alternative milks. Other are too thin, way to sweet, to grassy tasting, just icky. Soy Dreams is a nice texture, just right, not too thick, not to thin, slightly creamy. And the taste is great. Nothing strong of distinctive, nice and mild so it goes with anything.

It's getting hard to find with the bad rap on soy these days. So recently I've been thru all the other kinds again. Nope, yucko. I've been driving over an hour to a nearby town to get Soy Dreams at the last store I know of who carries it ..... and then .... I found it on Amazon !!!!! And it's even cheaper here !!! It is one of the more expensive soy milks, but to me it's totally worth it. I love it, I feel better when I use soy and others just have a taste I'm not going to use !
