Warm Milk vs Cold Milk for Toddlers

Many people believe that cold milk causes stomach discomfort for toddlers, but is that even true? Your child may be prefer warm milk because of a habit, however, there is no medical necessity for warming their milk before they consume it.

Because warming milk can be tedious and time-consuming, switching to cold milk can save you time while also allowing your child to try something new. Transitioning to cold milk is a relatively simple undertaking when done slowly and with plenty of praise.

How to Transition My Toddler From Warm Milk to Cold Milk?

1. Don't Make It Obvious

Offer milk in the same cup you've always used and try to make as few changes as possible while you're transitioning. When faced with change, toddlers might become stubborn and difficult, so it's better to keep the changes to a minimum for the best chance of success. By doing this, you also rule out the notion that your child is rejecting milk because of the cup.

2. Slightly Reduce the Temperature

For instance, microwave the milk for 15 seconds instead of the normal 20 to make it slightly cooler than usual so that your kid won't likely notice the little temperature difference.

You should keep decreasing the temperature. Allow your child a day to adjust to each temperature change. Rushing the transfer could lead to defiance, which would need you to restart the process.

3. Complimenting Them

Compliment your toddler for drinking the milk. Avoid mentioning how cold the milk is. Encourage her instead by stating that she is drinking milk "just like mother" and that the milk is tasty. Because of this, toddlers will react positively when they drink cooler milk.

4. Slowly but Surely

Once you think your toddler is ready for drinking completely cold milk, you can serve the milk after meals first. Later on, you can introduce cold milk at bedtime once your youngster has gotten used to drinking it during mealtimes.

Best Milk for Toddlers

A. Cold Milk - UHT Milk

Once your child turns 1, you can begin introducing full cream milk into his diet. Full cream milk can be UHT (Ultra Heat Treated), pasteurized cow's milk, or powdered for your toddler.

UHT is a food processing technology by milk production facilities to ensure food safety of the milk. Milk is exposed to ultra heat for a short period of time during the UHT process to eliminate any undesired and harmful germs that may be present in raw milk while keeping its nutritional content.

Toddlers less than two years of age should have full cream milk. After two years of age, children can drink either full-fat or reduced-fat milk with the rest of the family. (Source) Because toddlers have very high energy requirements and should not be taking low-fat or skimmed milk.

My 4 month old loves it and it also helps with her gas, crying and spit up. If you are iffy about giving this to your infant, go to name brands web site and look at what they say about why they have to put toddle on the label when it’s really not just for toddlers it’s for newborns too and it’s really healthy for them

FAQ

1. UHT Milk Benefits

a. Extended Shelf life
Milk that has been ultra-pasteurized (UHT) is known to last far longer than regular milk. UHT milk that comes in airtight packaging has a shelf life of 6 to 9 months.

b. Safer Than Untreated Milk
The higher temperatures that are used in this process destroy the heat-resistant bacteria in your milk, which makes UHT milk safer for your kids to consume.

c. High Nutritional Value
Highly beneficial for your health, UHT milk is loaded with essential nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, calcium, zinc, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, riboflavin, vitamins A and B12. (Source)

2. Fresh Milk vs UHT Milk

As for fresh and UHT milk, medical experts say the difference between the two is minimal. Both types of milk are pasteurised – heat-treated to destroy pathogens and bacteria.

The difference is in the way and temperature at which this process is done.

Dr Han Wee Meng, head of nutrition and dietetics at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, says: “Both fresh and UHT milk are equally recommended for children. The choice depends on individual taste preferences and practical considerations.”

She adds that pasteurisation does not significantly alter the nutritional composition of the milk, in terms of energy, protein, calcium and phosphorous content.

While some vitamins may be lost, additional nutrients may sometimes be added back into the milk after pasteurisation. (Source)

3. When Can I Introduce Low-fat Milk to My Baby?

After the age of two, parents can switch their children to low-fat milk.

However, if there is a concern about the child's growth and development, therefore it is still recommended for parents to continue to feed their children full-cream milk because it provides extra energy.
