Natural Ways to Prevent Kidney Stones
There are a number of natural ways to aid in preventing kidney stone formation, including:
- Stay hydrated: One of the best methods to avoid kidney stones is by drinking enough fluids, particularly water. To help your kidneys get rid of waste, try to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water each day.
- Maintain a healthy diet: Consuming a diet low in sodium, high in fiber, and abundant in fruits and vegetables can aid in the prevention of kidney stone formation. Limit your intake of high-oxalate foods, such as spinach, rhubarb, and beets, and high-purine foods, such as organ meats and shellfish.
- Limit your consumption of animal protein such as meat, poultry, and fish because it raises your risk of kidney stones. Try to keep your daily consumption to no more than 6 ounces.
- Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help avoid kidney stones by enhancing general health and lowering your risk of becoming obese, developing diabetes, and developing other illnesses that can raise your risk of stone formation.
- Manage your weight: Kidney stones are more likely to occur in people who are overweight or obese. If you are overweight, try to lose weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise.
- Reduce your consumption of alcohol and caffeinated beverages.
Citrate Supplements to Prevent Kidney Stones
A. Potassium Citrate
Potassium citrate is commonly used in the prevention of kidney stones. Potassium citrate works by raising the pH of urine, which makes it less acidic and therefore less likely to form crystals that can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Another element that may contribute to kidney stone formation is the amount of calcium in the urine, and potassium citrate can aid in lowering this amount.A study showed that potassium citrate is efficient in preventing new stone formation in idiopathic hypocitraturic calcium nephrolithiasis.
Ketogenic Diet in Childhood Epilepsy
Ketogenic Diet in Childhood Epilepsy
The ketogenic diet is found to be beneficial for lessening or preventing seizures in many children whose seizures can not be controlled by drugs. However, kidney stones are an adverse event with the ketogenic diet, occurring in approximately 6% of children who are started on this therapy for intractable epilepsy.
Fortunately, oral potassium citrate is found to be an effective preventive supplement against kidney stones in children who receive the ketogenic diet according to one study.
Potassium Citrate Side Effect
Consuming potassium citrate may have potential side effects, just like with any medication. Stomach upset, such as nausea or diarrhea, is a common side effect. Moreover, potassium citrate can occasionally lead to a rise in blood potassium levels, which can be harmful for people with specific medical conditions.Consult with your healthcare provider before using potassium citrate to prevent kidney stones or treat any other condition in order to find out if it is the best treatment option for you, learn about any possible side effects, and take any necessary precautions.

I use this for electrolyte balance on a keto style diet. It helps with binding to oxalates in plant foods (chocolate, tea, spinach, etc.) to carry them safely out of the body before it can cause kidney stones, back pain or joint pain. For some reason, some people don't deal well with oxalates, so we suffer with pain and kidney stones without realizing we need citrate to help us deal with the oxalate before the body stores it in crystalized formations that cause such terrible pain. Was happy to find this NOW brand at a good price. I take 2-3 with my lunch and it seems to do the trick. No more back pain!

B. Citric Acid
When citric acid is taken, it can raise the level of citrate in the urine, which can aid in preventing the development of calcium-based kidney stones. This is because calcium in the urine may bind with citrate, preventing calcium from crystallizing and forming stones.
However, not all kidney stones are made of calcium. Some are made of different substances, such as struvite or uric acid. These kinds of stones might not be prevented by citric acid.
Sources of Citric Acid
Citric acid is a natural component of many fruits and vegetables, including citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, and berries such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. It is also available as a dietary supplement.
Citric Acid Supplement Side Effect
Just like consuming citric acid in food and beverages, citric acid supplements can also erode tooth enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity, discoloration, and even cavities if taken in large amounts or over a prolonged period.
If taken in high doses, citric acid supplements may also result in gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Additionally, some people may be allergic to citric acid, and taking supplements containing the acid can result in side effects like hives, itching, and swelling.
It's also important to note that citric acid can interfere with the absorption and effectiveness of certain medications, so best to consult with your doctor before taking citric acid supplements, especially if you are on medication.

I got this to put on food to prevent kidney stones. It taste very similar to the lime salt chipotle puts on their chips. I sprinkle it on food that I would normally sprinkle with salt. It tastes great! I love it and so does my husband. It taste good in chili and tacos and on steamed veggies and French fries so far! It's like a lemon lime salt taste. Also good in guacamole.

I ordered this simply to dissolve my kidney stones. The product works, definitely cuts down on passing of kidney stones that doctors and women who have them can attest that they are worse than labor. I recommend this for this purpose, I mix it in sweet tea and drink it, remember though that it's a sweetener itself, too much will cause a bitterness as well as sweet taste.
