15 Best Vitamin Brands for Women in 2024

In general, women eating a balanced diet can meet their vitamin and mineral needs from food alone. However, supplementation may be indicated during certain life stages, like pregnancy or post-menopause, and to treat a diagnosed deficiency.

Multivitamins may also benefit those following restrictive diets that limit certain food groups or those with medical conditions causing decreased absorption.

What Kind of Vitamins Should a Woman Take Daily?

Women tend to be low in iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B6. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all vitamin protocol, as nutrient needs vary by individual.

Still, before taking any vitamin supplements, it’s best to have your diet assessed by a nutrition professional to see if supplements are necessary.

Who Should Take Multivitamins?

In general, the following populations may benefit from a women’s multivitamin..

a. Older adults
As we age, it can become more difficult to absorb certain nutrients, such as B12 and vitamin D. Additionally, those over the age of 70 require more calcium and vitamin D to support bone health. While you can get these nutrients from food, in some cases, supplementation may be warranted.

b. People with poor absorption
Some medical conditions can cause decreased ability to absorb nutrients, so supplementation may be indicated. These include:
– Digestive conditions
– Conditions that cause vomiting or diarrhea
– Surgeries that alter the digestive tract (including bariatric surgery)
– Alcoholism
– Certain medications

c. Those on a restrictive diet
If you follow a diet that limits certain food groups, you may benefit from a multivitamin. For example, vegan and vegetarian diets tend to be low in calcium, vitamin D, B12, zinc, iron and iodine.

d. Those that are trying to conceive
The CDC recommends that anyone who might become pregnant take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day to prevent neural birth defects in the baby.

e. Those that are pregnant
Pregnancy is a time of increased nutrient needs. According to USDA data, many pregnant and lactating people are not meeting recommendations for certain food groups and specific nutrients, so it is generally recommended for these populations to take a daily prenatal vitamin6 Both the CDC and American College of Obstretricians and Gynecologists recommend taking a daily prenatal vitamin with 400 micrograms of folic acid during pregnancy.

Who Should Not Take Multivitamins?

There is no regulated definition of what a Women’s Multivitamin is and what it must contain. Therefore, different women’s multivitamins contain different combinations and doses of nutrients, which should be reviewed with a healthcare provider before beginning that supplement.

Women who should consult their doctor before taking a multivitamin include..

a. Those who eat a well-balanced diet
If you eat a well-balanced, varied diet, you likely don’t need a multivitamin, especially if you are not pregnant or trying to conceive and do not have any health conditions.

b. Those taking individual supplements
If you take individual supplements in additional to a multivitamin, you are at higher risk of exceeding the Upper Tolerable Intake Levels (UL), which can lead to adverse health outcomes.10 If a healthcare provider has diagnosed you with a deficiency based on your blood work, individual supplementation of specific nutrients may be indicated. Taking multiple supplements should be done under the supervision of a physician to reduce the risk of over supplementation.

c. Those taking certain medications
Multivitamins can interact with certain medications, so be sure to check with a healthcare provider before taking any supplements to ensure they are safe.

How to Choose a Multivitamin for Women

Before beginning any new supplement, we recommend talking with a healthcare professional. Not everyone needs to take vitamins.

If you’re deficient in any specific nutrients, your healthcare professional may recommend taking a single nutrient vitamin instead.

With so many multivitamins available, deciding what product to choose can feel overwhelming. Here are a few factors to consider when picking a multivitamin:

a. Age and life stage
There are multivitamins made specifically for different age groups, as our nutrient needs change as we age. On a similar note, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should opt for a product that’s specifically formulated to meet their prenatal or postnatal needs.

b. Dietary restrictions or allergies
Be sure to carefully read ingredient labels if you have a food allergy or dietary restriction.

c. Amount of nutrients provided
In general, it’s best to avoid products that contain megadoses of any vitamins or minerals unless a higher dose has been recommended by a healthcare professional.

d. Number of pills
If you have difficulty remembering to take your vitamins, opt for a product that’s taken once per day. Additionally, if you don’t like swallowing pills, consider a gummy or chewable option instead.

e. Budget
Since some products recommend taking multiple pills per day, be sure to consider the price per serving when determining whether a supplement fits your budget.

f. Quality
Look for supplements that are thoroughly tested for quality and accuracy. Ideally, choose products that are third-party tested by organizations such as USP, National Science Foundation (NSF), or ConsumerLab.

Best Multivitamin for Women In 20s

If You’re in 20s, These are Ingredients Your Multivitamin Should Have…

The recommended daily allowance for women is 1.1 mg of B2, 1.3 mg of B6, 400 mcg of folic acid and 2.4 mcg of B12.

a. Vitamin B
Women in their 20s usually need more energy, as they are usually more active and on the go. B vitamins help your body make energy from the food you eat, as well as help make red blood cells.

Taking birth control can deplete certain B vitamins, including B2 (riboflavin), B9 (folic acid) and B12. Taking B-complex vitamin supplements would cover all these nutrients, but these nutrients can also be obtained from food.

b. Folic Acid
Multivitamins containing 400 mcg to 800 mcg of folic acid are recommended for women of reproductive age, as it can reduce the risk of birth defects in newborns.

c. Magnesium
Magnesium typically found in foods high in dietary fiber is another recommended vitamin, as 20-something women typically don’t get the recommended 320 mg a day. Magnesium deficiency can cause loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness.

d. Calcium
Calcium helps develop bone density or bone mass, which keeps growing until the late 20s. Getting enough calcium at this age reduces your risk for osteoporosis later.

e. Iron
In your 20s, iron is important. Monthly menstrual cycles increase the risk for iron deficiency. Women who participate in high intensity and endurance sports may need more iron. Iron supplements could also help prevent iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy. You need at least 18 mg of iron per day; 27 mg if you’re pregnant.

Centrum Wellness Pack for Woman 20+ Reviews
I am a 25 year old baby girl mom that works 10 hours a day during weekdays and have these multivitamin work great! I need that extra boost of energy and focus, and to make sure I am getting all my nutrients even in the busiest day and this is what it does. No scary warning messages about cancer which is a super plus compared to my last GNC multivitamins.

I don’t find any strong odor nor color when body eliminates the excess as with my priori GNC ones. No aftertaste and pretty easy to swallow each. Individual packaging is soooo convinient for the go or to carry them around the house still sealed without fear that one may fall to the floor and the baby will grab it. Absolutely great, will keep buying them. Recommended.

Optimum Nutrition Opti- Women Reviews
This thing is amazing. I feel like I’m taking some sort of superpower in a pill every morning. I only use one pill instead of the recommended two because I’m not consistently active enough to justify needing two on a regular basis. But, holy moly, just the one is so powerful! I workout longer! My sex drive is higher! My hair is shinier! If I ever miss a morning, I noticeably have less energy by noon. Such a good energy boost to get the day started right. I’m not saying it solves all problems…but it’s pretty great. I’ve been taking it the past eight months or so, and I plan on going to this brand for multivitamins for now on.

Best Multivitamin for Women Over 30s

If You’re in 30s, These are Ingredients Your Multivitamin Should Have…

a. Iron and Folic Acid
Folate and iron are required for effective erythropoiesis. Once you turn 30, your multivitamin still needs to contain iron and folic acid that may be useful for anemia control and prevention.

Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended daily oral iron and folic acid supplementation as part of antenatal care, in order to reduce the risks of low birth weight, maternal anemia, and iron deficiency. (Source)

b. Calcium and Vitamin D
These vitamins are needed to maintain bone health as the risk of osteoporosis increases as women age.

c. Vitamin C
When the skin is exposed to UV light, reactive oxygen species such as the superoxide ion, peroxide and singlet oxygen are generated. Vitamin C protects the skin from oxidative stress by sequentially donating electrons to neutralize the free radicals. (Source)

Moreover, Vitamin C is essential for collagen biosynthesis. Collagen can improve skin elasticity, reduce visible wrinkles, and increase blood flow to the skin.

OLLY Women’s Multivitamin Gummy Reviews
I took the entire 90 count bottle and nothing weird happened to me! For context I am a 30 year old female. I was hesitant after reading reviews on these vitamins to try them. I have acne prone skin and these did not make my breakouts any worse then normal. My hair didn’t fall out either. I actually feel great! More energy then normal. I’m seeing a lot of complaints on the taste of these.

I’m not sure people realize that these are vitamins, not candy. They taste fine. They smell strongly like vitamins but the actual flavor is not bad at all. I have a hard time swallowing large pills so gummies are much easier for me and these work great for that purpose. I will continue to use these vitamins. If something wild happens to me I’ll update my review. But for now they seem to work fine as a daily multivitamin.

Nature Made Prenatal Multivitamin Reviews
Keep in mind there are different versions of this pill – one with DHA, one without. For pregnancy, make sure you buy the version WITH DHA. It is listed on the back, second to last on the list, as Omega 3 (DHA) 200 mg. I’ve been taking this for 3 years, during which I had 2 pregnancies, and I have no complaints. Two healthy babies! No smell or taste.

This vitamin stood out to me because 1. it contains a full daily dose of Iron (most other prenatals do not) and 2. you only have to take 1 pill per day. Beware that any gummy vitamin will not contain Iron. It’s not possible to put Iron into a gummy formula (scientists haven’t figured that out yet). This prenatal really has nothing missing. Some people complain about the low amount of calcium. But, keep in mind, a full daily dose of calcium in 1 pill would be a HUGE pill! Therefore, if your calcium is low and you dont eat dairy, take a separate calcium pill as needed.

Best Multivitamin for Women Over 40s

If You’re in 40s, These are Ingredients Your Multivitamin Should Have…

a. Calcium and Vitamin D
Between the ages of 45 and 55, the menopausal transition usually begins. The length of time it takes can be determined by lifestyle factors such as smoking, the age at which it begins, and race and ethnicity.

Premenopausal women should get 1000 mg of calcium per day, whereas postmenopausal women should get 1200 mg (total diet plus supplement). Due to the danger of negative effects, you should not eat more than 2000 mg of calcium per day (total diet plus supplement).

b. Omega 3
Many women suffer from depressive symptoms during menopause and perimenopause. According to new research, omega-3 fatty acids reduce psychological distress and depression symptoms in menopausal and perimenopausal women. The study presents the first evidence that omega-3 supplementation can help with common menopause-related mental health issues. (Source)

Moreover, a study found that higher consumption of fish and omega-3 fatty acids among women is associated with a lower risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), particularly CHD deaths.

c. Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral that plays a role in a number of vital biological functions. It is involved in muscle and neuron function, blood pressure and blood sugar regulation, and even bone and DNA formation.

Magnesium may help you sleep better. It aids in the activation of mechanisms that quiet and relax you, and it plays a key part in your nervous system. It may also aid in the relief of anxiety and depression, both of which can disrupt sleep. The only research that shows these vitamins help people sleep better has been done on older adults.

Best Multivitamin for Women Over 50s

If You’re in 50s, These are Ingredients Your Multivitamin Should Have…

Registered Dietitian, Rachel Silverman, MS, RD, LC notes, “For women over 50, it is important to maintain adequate bone health to prevent diseases like osteoporosis. I recommend choosing a multivitamin that contains vitamin D, which enhances calcium absorption and helps protect bones against demineralization. Another ingredient to look for is CoQ10, which may help to replete energy levels if you are taking a medication to lower your cholesterol.“

What Kind of Vitamins Should a 50 Year Old Woman Take?

a. Calcium and Vitamin D
Calcium and vitamin D are critical nutrients to protect bone health. Your physician may have specific recommendations for calcium supplementation; however, if a multivitamin will suffice, ensure that the supplement has at least 1200 milligrams of calcium (100 percent RDA for females over 50). Vitamin D works in tandem with calcium. Ensure your multi has at least 600 IU of vitamin D, preferably in the form of vitamin D3.3

b. Vitamin B12
B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, are important for energy and neurological function. Absorption of this key nutrient can decrease as you age, so look for at least 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 in your multivitamin.4

c. What to Leave Out – Iron
With menopause, the iron requirements for women decrease. Many multis for women over 55 do not include iron for this reason but always check with your physician to ensure that your multivitamin meets your individual needs.

Why Is Iron Not Good For Seniors?
It’s easy to get 8 milligrams of iron daily by eating a healthy diet. The ODS cautions that women over 50 shouldn’t take iron supplements unless prescribed by a doctor to avoid overloading on iron, which could potentially cause organ damage.

Best Multivitamin for Women Over 60s

If You’re in 60s, These are Ingredients Your Multivitamin Should Have…

a. Calcium and Vitamin D
Calcium and vitamin D are critical nutrients to protect bone health. Women older than 50 should get calcium 1,200 mg daily (total diet plus supplement). Vitamin D works in tandem with calcium.

If you are age 51–70, you need at least 15 mcg (600 IU) each day, but not more than 100 mcg (4,000 IU). If you are over age 70, you need at least 20 mcg (800 IU), but not more than 100 mcg (4,000 IU). (Source)

b. Vitamin B
Older adults are more susceptible to vitamin B-12 deficiency. And a low vitamin B12 level may be related to accelerated aging of the brain, but confirming this finding requires further research.

A study also shown that low folate (B9) and B12 serum levels seem to be associated with depression in the aged. The gender-specific analyses are confined to a positive association of low B12 with depression among older women and call for further research in this direction.

Moreover, a study involving older Latino adults suggest that higher B-6 levels were linked to decreased depression symptoms.

c. Omega 3
Age-related hearing loss becomes more common, primarily as a result of degenerative changes in the ear canal, eardrum and other structures of the ear. About 45 percent of 60-somethings experience some degree of hearing loss, rising to 68 percent among 70-somethings. After age 60, the ability to hear high-frequency tones also diminishes.

Increased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids, and the fish which provide them, may reduce the risk of age-related hearing loss, according to a study from the University of Sydney. (Source) However, excessive consumption of omega-3 fatty acids can be harmful. Remember to always follow intake recommendation or consut a doctor for determining the right dose.

Another study shown that regular fish consumption and higher intake of long-chain omega-3 PUFAs are associated with lower risk of hearing loss in women.

d. Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that your body naturally produces. CoQ10 is used by your cells for both growth and maintenance.

As you get older, your body’s CoQ10 levels decrease. CoQ10 levels have also been found to be lower in people suffering from certain conditions, such as heart disease, and in those who taking cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins.

CoQ10 has been shown to improve symptoms of congestive heart failure. Although findings are mixed, CoQ10 might help reduce blood pressure. Some research also suggests that when combined with other nutrients, CoQ10 might aid recovery in people who’ve had bypass and heart valve surgeries. (Source)

CoQ10 is considered safe, with few side effects. However, best to take this supplement under your doctor’s supervision.

e. Vitamin C
Vitamin C levels have been shown to decrease in the elderly population as well as those exhibiting chronic underlying conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension). This report shows a strong inverse correlation with blood ascorbic acid levels and all-cause mortality, including cardiovascular disease.

New Chapter Every Woman’s One Daily 55+ Reviews
Been using these vitamins a few years now. I had given up on multivitamins because I don’t always eat breakfast and vitamins made me super nauseous. These don’t upset my stomach even when taken on an empty stomach .

FAQs

a. Best Time To Take Multivitamins

Some vitamins, like water-soluble vitamins, can be absorbed on an empty stomach. However, multivitamins typically contain fat-soluble vitamins as well, which require dietary fat for absorption.

That’s why it’s often best to take your multivitamin with a meal or snack.

To make remembering to take your multivitamin easier, it may be helpful to take your vitamin with the same meal each day.

b. Can I Take Multivitamins Everyday?

Studies have shown that while taking a multivitamin daily can help some individuals meet their nutritional needs, in others it may lead to excessive intakes of nutrients.

For this reason, it’s important to carefully read supplement labels and identify any nutrients that you’re already consuming regularly, either through your diet or other supplements you may be taking.

Another important factor is the types of vitamins included in a product.

Water-soluble vitamins, like B vitamins and vitamin C, are easily excreted in the urine when consumed in excess. However, fat-soluble vitamins — vitamins A, D, E, and K — can build up in the body, potentially leading to toxicity.

It’s a good idea to check with a healthcare professional before beginning any new supplement, including a multivitamin. They may recommend a single-nutrient vitamin for you, rather than a multivitamin, to ensure you aren’t regularly consuming excessive amounts of nutrients.
