Mama Bear Diapers 2022 - Price and Review

How to Buy Baby Diapers

Keep in mind that different brands may work better or worse for different babies, so be open to trying a few different diapers before you decide on the right ones for you. Sometimes a diaper that costs a little more is a better fit and works better, making it worth the extra money.

Most newborns gain about 3 pounds during the first month and babies born with a higher birth weight tend to skip this diaper size altogether. Therefore, there's no point stockpiling on size NB.

Once you get a feel for fit, cost, brand, and size, go ahead and purchase more — up to an entire year’s worth or more of diapers. Keep in mind your own baby’s weight and rate of gain when planning. Never pay full price for diapers unless it’s an emergency (more on saving on diapers below).

Things to Consider When Picking Your Baby's Diaper

a) Pick Trustable Brands
Make sure you pink a trustable brand.

b) Diaper Features
Make sure your diapers have features that are suitable for your condition. For example; Good Absorbency, Wetness Indicator Lines, Soft and Breathable, Stretchability and Fit.

c) Pick the right size
Avoid loading up on one size because your baby will require bigger-sized diapers every few months. Refer to our diaper size and weight chart below.

d) Skin Sensitivity
If your baby is facing skin problems such as diaper rash, it may be because your baby has sensitive skin which is reacting to their diapers. For cases like these, you should try hypoallergenic diapers such as Huggies Little Snugglers that are less likely to irritate your baby's skin.

Review - Mama Bear Gentle Touch Diapers VS Mama Bear Plush Protection

a. ** Summary **

The new Mama Bear Plush falls a bit short of the excellent Mama Bear Gentle Touch (“GT”). Despite Amazon’s claims, I found the Plush wasn’t any softer than the GT. The real difference is that the Plush has a much wider cut in the crotch area, while the GT uses a longer and trimmer absorbent core.

Meanwhile, both diapers are hypoallergenic.

b. ** A Detailed Look **

Plush = Mama Bear Plush Protection (this product, new as of late 2021)

GT = Mama Bear Gentle Touch (Amazon’s other baby diaper offering)

The Plush is manufactured by Domtar, which is the same company that produces Wal-Mart’s Parent’s Choice diaper. In fact, the Plush is nearly identical to the Parent’s Choice, the only discernible difference is that the Plush absorbent core has a slight narrowing in the crotch that makes the diaper fit between the legs better. This is consistent with the test results, where the Plush achieved slightly lower absorption across all tests.

The GT is made by First Quality, who sells the same diaper under the Cuties brand. The GT, like the Plush, is assembled in the USA.

c. ** Mama Bear Diapers Ingredients **

Mama Bear Gentle Touch Diapers are free from the following ingredients..
  •     Chlorine Bleaching
  •     Perfumes
  •     Lotions
  •     Parabens
  •     Phthalates

Plush Protection Diapers are free from the following ingredients..
  •     Latex
  •     Lotions
  •     Fragrances
  •     Elemental Chlorine Bleaching

The biggest difference here is that Plush contains phthalates, while the GT is phthalate-free.

i. About Phthalates In Diapers

Essentially, phthalates are used in all sorts of household items, from vinyl flooring and wall covering to cosmetics and children’s toys.

There is solid scientific evidence (published in respected peer-reviewed journals) that these chemicals can cause severe developmental disabilities, particularly in utero and for young children, and that they are absorbed through the skin. However, there isn’t any good data on whether the amount that would leach out of a diaper and into an infant would be concerning.

Diapers might describe themselves as either ‘elemental chlorine-free’ or ‘totally chlorine-free’. While totally chlorine-free is the better option, elemental chlorine-free bleaching means that, even though the diaper isn’t necessarily completely free of chlorine, the process reduces its toxicity. This means that elementally chlorine-free, which is what Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers describe themselves as is much safer for the environment than conventional bleaching.

Their Gentle Touch diapers, on the other hand, state they’re free of chlorine bleaching, so they’re clearly a better choice when it comes to finding a more natural diaper.

Mama Bear diapers are not biodegradable and are made predominantly with plastics.

Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers use fluff pulp in their core. However, this variety of diapers doesn't have any other eco-credentials.

Meanwhile, Mama Bear Gentle Touch are cruelty-free, not tested on animals, and are produced in a zero waste to landfill facility. This means that waste produced when making the diapers is reused or recycled, rather than sent straight to landfill!

Amazon’s Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers aren’t forthcoming with their ingredients lists, and don’t boast of any plant-based or ‘natural’ materials being used in their manufacturing aside from a fluff pulp core.

Gentle Touch diapers fare better in the ‘natural’ stakes, being hypoallergenic and free from chlorine bleaching, perfumes, lotions, parabens and phthalates. So while they’re not made with a high percentage of plant-based or ‘naturally derived’ materials, as far as we know, they’re gentler on baby’s skin.

d. ** Mama Bear Diapers Fit **

The absorbent core of the GT is longer and slimmer than the Plush. Whether this is good or bad likely depends on the shape of your baby. In my opinion, the GT fits our baby better, but both diapers perform very well.

e. ** Mama Bear Diapers Absorbency **

I tested the absorbency of several popular brands of diapers, as can be seen in the attached chart. The test involves fully saturating the absorbent core of each diaper for 30 minutes in a saline solution (0.9% (w/v) NaCl) to simulate urine.

There are three measurements; the initial weight after dripping for 10 seconds, the weight after dripping for 10 minutes, and a final measurement after spinning in a centrifuge (~250g) for 5 minutes. Different mixtures of Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) and cellulose fluff, as well as other factors, will determine how well each diaper does in the different measurements. In general, more fluff will increase the former measurements, while more SAP will increase the latter measurements.

To oversimplify, fluff will rapidly absorb urine (ideally before it escapes the diaper) but can not retain it under pressure. SAP will absorb more slowly than fluff, but once absorbed it’s locked in. The fluff and SAP work together to rapidly retain, then lock away urine so it can’t be pressed out as the baby moves around. In reality, there’s much more to this, but this is already getting pretty absurd for an Amazon.com review.

FAQ

1. Diapers Guide 101

2. How Often Should You Change Your Baby's Diaper?

Change your newborn’s diaper every two to three hours, or as needed, according to experts. Because if the diaper isn’t changed frequently, the baby is at risk of developing skin rashes, infections, and a variety of other health problems.

3. Benefits of Disposable Baby Diapers
Disposable diapers are light, compact, absorbent, leak-proof, and simple to use. Because of the softness, lightness, and ‘breathability’ of the fabrics used, newborns and toddlers find it comfortable to wear.

4. When Does A Child Usually Stop Using Diapers?

Between the ages of 18 and 30 months, most children will have completed toilet training and will be ready to stop using diapers, however, this is not the case for all children. In some cases, kids still wear diapers until they are four years old.

5. Diaper Rash

a. What is diaper rash?
Diaper rash is a common type of inflamed skin (dermatitis) that appears on your baby’s bottom as a patchwork of bright red skin. Wet or infrequently changed diapers, skin sensitivity, and chafing are all common causes of diaper rash.

b. Causes of diaper rash
Diaper rash can be caused by a variety of factors. Diaper rash can occur when a new food is introduced into your child’s diet. It could also be the result of a new laundry detergent or bath product.

Diaper rash can also occur when a child’s diaper is not changed frequently enough or caused by antibiotics your child is taking. Additionally, diapers or wipes that aren’t compatible with your child’s skin may be the reason of their diaper rash.

c. What to know about diaper rash
Diaper rash is frequently caused by a skin irritation caused by too much moisture in the diaper. The best way to solve this problem is to keep your baby’s bottom dry.

For heavy wetter, do not change diapers too soon because if your baby sitting in a lot of moisture for long periods that can cause rashes.

It is also critical to avoid using any petroleum-based products on your baby’s sensitive skin because they cause too many dry spots, which can worsen the condition or cause more frequent flare-ups. Vaseline, Icy Hot, and Aquafor are examples of such products.

d. How to treat diaper rash

Know the cause. If the cause is a lack of hygiene, you should change your child’s diaper on a regular basis, making sure to thoroughly clean the baby’s bottom with a wipe or wet washcloth after each change. Then, apply a thin layer of diaper rash ointment to your baby’s bum to keep moisture at bay.

If your baby’s skin is really sensitive, it is best to use a diaper designed for sensitive skin. Change your child’s diaper frequently to avoid diaper rash in the future — moisture trapped on your child’s skin for an extended period of time can be quite harmful.

If it is due to a yeast infection. This will take a week or two of daily application of anti-fungal cream. Always make sure that your baby’s bottom is dry and clean while you’re treating them.

e. How to choose the best diapers for diaper rash

i. Size
Most newborns gain about 3 pounds during the first month and babies born with a higher birth weight tend to skip this diaper size altogether. Therefore, there’s no point stockpiling on size NB.

You can always start small. Try stockpiling no larger than size 1, just in case you don’t like the first brand you try.

Once you get a feel for fit, cost, brand, and size, go ahead and purchase more — up to an entire year’s worth or more of diapers. Keep in mind your own baby’s weight and rate of gain when planning. Never pay full price for diapers unless it’s an emergency

ii. Price
Expensive diapers are not always suitable for your baby. But do not use cheaper diapers if it is not suitable for your baby’s skin because if your baby’s skin got rashes and infection, you will spend more money for the treatment.

iii. Features
If your baby’s skin is sensitive, make sure that the diapers you chose is hypoallergenic or for sensitive skin.

And if your baby has eczema, make sure the diapers you chose are fragrance-free and do not contain any harsh ingredients because they may aggravate the symptoms.

6. Is Mama Bear Diapers Discontinued?

Mama Bear's Best Fit diapers used to be available on Amazon. However, this brand has been discontinued and replaced with Mama Bear Plush Protection. Unlike Mama Bear Best Fit, Mama Bear Plush Protection uses sustainably sourced wood pulp.
