12 Best Supplements For Sinus And Allergies 2024

Allergies can occur at any time in one’s life. While allergies are more common in childhood, it’s still possible to develop allergies to new substances as an adult.

Allergies or the virus that causes the common cold is the most prevalent cause of sinus infections. But in few cases the infection is caused by bacteria.

A viral sinus infection will normally start to improve after five to seven days. A bacterial sinus infection can last for seven to ten days or more, and it can even get worse after that.

Besides using medication, the best thing we can do is to prevent it. So, if you’re searching for more helpful survival ideas, we’ve put together a list of ones that will help keep your sinuses health.

Vitamins for Sinus and Allergies

A. Vitamin A for Allergies

Taking enough Vitamin A ensure the normal functioning of your organs and immune system. Vitamin A help to fights off infections caused by bacteria or viruses.

A study found that antioxidant, anti-infective, immunomodulator vitamin A may be a useful addition in the management of sinusitis.

Best to check with your doctor to determine the right dose for your condition because taking too much vitamin A can lead to serious side effects. The tolerable upper limit (UL) of Vitamin A is 10,000 IU (3,000 mcg) for adults to prevent toxicity.

B. Vitamin C for Allergies 2023

Some data showed that vitamin C, usually known as ascorbic acid, might aid with some allergies. Vitamin C is an antihistamine and antioxidant in nature. It has been found in studies to reduce inflammation, swelling, and other symptoms associated with allergic reactions.

In addition, increasing your vitamin C intake may speed up the recovery from a sinus infection, minimize sinus inflammation, and shorten the length of a sinus infection or cold.

I really like the taste of these gummies. Good sweet orange flavor. Although I will admit that when you open the container they have an initial weird smell and kind of odd taste right at first which I think is the sugar crystals on the outside of each gummy. But the inside tastes great. It's not all sticky on your teeth like some vitamin gummies. Would be great for kids for extra dose of Vit C. Good price per serving too

E. Quercetin for Allergies 2023

Quercetin, a bioflavonoid found in onions, is a powerful histamine inhibitor. It also has antiviral properties, which can help prevent herpes breakouts and the common cold. Allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis, sinusitis, colds, and flu may benefit from quercetin.

How does quercetin manage allergy symptoms?
Studies have shown that quercetin stabilizes mast cells that release histamine. Histamine is the principal mediator of reactions to pollen and other allergies. This makes quercetin a natural antihistamine. Many people use quercetin to treat symptoms of hay fever, including runny nose, watering eyes, and itching.

This study published in Molecules in 2016, for example, found that quercetin could be effective for treating the anaphylactic (allergic) reaction in someone with peanut allergies. A similar study from 2006 concluded that quercetin was a “safe, natural therapy that may be used as primary therapy or in conjunction with conventional methods” for blocking allergies.

Quercetin and Vitamin C for Allergies
The antihistamine impact of quercetin is enhanced when combined with vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Vitamin C, through reducing histamine release from cells and promoting histamine breakdown, may have a favorable influence on histamine levels.

Hives x 3 months with very little sleep. Everytime I ate hives appeared on my arms and legs. Living in extreme misery. Doc gave me medrol dose pack h1 and h2 histamines. Added colustrum, betaine hcl (5-6 caplets each meal) and lastly quercertin. Modern meds did little to nothing. Colustrum and Betaine hcl offered noticiable improvement. Quercertin arrived today. Took 2 Quercetin had a snack short time later and I am happy to report no hives. Absolutely none. I am hopeful there is restful sleep in the very near future. Hoping this helps with RA inflammation as well. Will update end on week. Thank you for making this very awesome product!!

Review
This is the best quercetin I found on the market! It was a revelation to me to discover that regular quercetin is difficult for the body to absorb. After doing my research I discovered that quercetin phytosome has much greater absorption and is therefore more effective. I have been taking this for over a month and my allergy symptoms have been reduced tremendously. In addition, this company added specific Whole Foods that contain the highest amount of added quercetin for additional quercetin benefits. Besides allergies I also take this for it’s high anti oxidants and many other health benefits. I love this brand and I will continue to buy their products.

I have year round allergies and lately what I had been taking wasn't working and my eyes were always running. It was extremely annoying and frustrating to be crying from one eye all day. I read the reviews and decided to try this. I've been taking them twice a day since March 1st and I stopped crying the first day. I love these natural pills. They work!!!!

11. Natural Factors Bioactive Quercetin

Natural Factors Bioactive Quercetin EMIQ claims to have 40 times better absorption than ordinary quercetin. Other quercetin supplements here use bromelain to boost bioavailability, but this supplement uses “EMIQ”, a proprietary formula made from “Enzymatically Modified IsoQuercetin”.

Dosage of quercetin is somewhat low (as compared to other brands) in each capsule. However, Natural Factors claims the quercetin is more bioavailable, which means your body gets a strong dose regardless. Each capsule contains 167 mg of EMIQ and 50 mg of vitamin C. Natural Factors claims their formula will provide year-round protection while supporting a healthy inflammatory response and maintaining good sinus and upper respiratory function.

Our Take: Best Quercetin for Bioavailability

"I’ve been on quercetin for a long time for bad allergies - the kind that requires MULTIPLE antihistamines. (Mast Cell Activation Disorder - basically your body releases too much histamine to too many stimulus). This quercetin is WAY more potent and WAY more effective than regular quercetin. I take a lot less of this, and only once a day, and it really helps my allergies. It’s a little spendy but well worth it due to it’s effectiveness. Also this is a good brand that I trust. I’ve been researching and taking supplements for more than 20 years, and this one brand I always feel comfortable recommending to others."

F. Probiotics for Allergy

A literature review of 115 articles on probiotics and allergic diseases, published in Foods 2021, gave an idea of the great benefits that are likely to result from the use of probiotics in the treatment of allergies and the administration of probiotics alongside other treatments, thus reducing the suffering of people living with allergies.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2017), conducted by the University of Florida found that the symptoms of hay fever may be eased with the integration of a specific combination of probiotics into sufferers’ daily diet.

Previous studies have revealed that probiotics can help to regulate the body’s immune response to allergies as well as provide benefits for your digestive health. Scientists have hypothesized that probiotics may increase an individual’s tolerance to hay fever symptoms by raising the percentage of the immune system’s regulatory T-cells.

To examine the effect of these probiotics on hay fever symptoms, the research team gathered 173 adult participants who reported suffering from seasonal allergies but were otherwise deemed healthy. These participants were split into two groups, with the first being instructed to take the probiotic and the second given a placebo. Over the course of eight weeks, all participants responded to a weekly online survey that measured their symptom severity and tracked their level of discomfort. DNA was analyzed from stool samples taken from each participant to track who was taking the probiotic as well as how their intestinal bacteria changed.

The results found that those who had been taking the probiotic throughout the eight-week experiment reported suffering fewer allergy-related symptoms than those taking the placebo. Previous research has shown that seasonal allergies can reduce sleep quality, productivity, and cause stress and embarrassment for the patient, meaning the improvement seen due to the use of probiotics not only reduced symptoms but increased the quality of life for the participants.

Current allergy medications often come with unwanted side effects such as drowsiness and dry mouth, meaning natural alternatives like probiotics could be beneficial for many fighting seasonal allergies. Further research should be conducted into how effective probiotics may be in treating more severe allergies.

FAQs

1. How To Keep Sinuses Healthy

a. Find out what is causing your allergies
Pollen, cat dander, dust mites, dirt, and other allergens can irritate the nasal passages. Find out and avoid what is causing your allergies. Using an air conditioner in your home and car during warm temperatures and keeping windows closed during pollen season can help reduce allergy-related sinus issues. To avoid exposure to dander and dust mites, keep dogs out of your bedroom. If you’re working in a moist environment, you should also wear a mask to avoid mold.

b. Maintain personal hygiene
Viruses and bacteria are the most common causes of sinus infection. They can spread easily through droplets coughed or sneezed into the air. That’s why if you think someone has an upper respiratory illness, avoid or use a mask, and wash your hands often with soap and water to prevent infection!

c. Avoid cigarette smoke and other air pollutants
Sinus difficulties can be caused by contaminated air both inside and outside your home. The efficacy of the mucociliary transport system in the nose and sinuses is reduced by smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke and other air pollutants, resulting in swelling and congestion. Other typical causes of irritants include wood smoke, fog, fumes, and dust.

d. Keep your sinuses healthy and moist
In dry and cold climates, using a humidifier on a regular basis can help restore healthy moisture levels and support the sinuses. The ideal air humidity for healthy sinuses is 30 percent to 50 percent, which you may test using a hygrometer.

Alternatively, you may use saline nasal sprays, which are one of the most efficient and convenient ways to keep your sinuses moist both at home and outside. Unlike prescription decongestants, which dry up the sinuses, all-natural saline nasal sprays maintain the sinuses moist and healthy even when used on a regular basis. When purchasing a nasal spray, read the label carefully to see if it contains medicated decongestants, which can create increased dryness in the sinuses and become habit-forming.

e. Stay hydrated
Limit your intake of dehydrating beverages like coffee and alcohol, and drink plenty of water instead. Because you need to drink enough water to keep the mucus produced in your sinuses flowing smoothly

2. Inflammation vs Allergies vs Hives vs Sinusitis

In general, there are two types of allergies; generalised and local. Hives are generalised allergies, could be triggered by food (e.g. peanuts) or antibiotics or certain medications. Local allergies instead affect a certain area of the body e.g. scalp (allergic to hair dye) or face (allergic to certain make-up).

Allergies are triggered by allergens (an allergen is normally a foreign substance that can cause an allergic reaction) leading to inflammation. However, inflammation can also be triggered not only by allergens but also by bacterial or viral infections.

For example an acne is a skin infection with inflammation. Inflammation associated with an infection is not considered an allergy. Therefore, the treatment approach is different.

a. Allergies vs Sinus Infection / Sinusitis
Sinusitis basically means inflammation of the nasal sinuses (refer to the figure above). It could be related to an allergy or infection.

Allergies and sinus infections are not the same thing. Allergies are triggered by your immune system’s response to allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander. When your nasal passages get infected, you suffer a sinus infection, often known as sinusitis.

Both illnesses can induce nasal irritation, which can result in congestion and a stuffy nose. Nonetheless, the symptoms of these two illnesses are different.
