10 Best Eco Friendly Diapers 2022

How to Buy Baby Diapers

Most newborns gain about 3 pounds during the first month and babies born with a higher birth weight tend to skip this diaper size altogether. Therefore, there’s no point stockpiling on size NB.

You can always start small. Try stockpiling no larger than size 1, just in case you don’t like the first brand you try.

Once you get a feel for fit, cost, brand, and size, go ahead and purchase more — up to an entire year’s worth or more of diapers. Keep in mind your own baby’s weight and rate of gain when planning. Never pay full price for diapers unless it’s an emergency (more on saving on diapers below).

Keep in mind that different brands may work better or worse for different babies, so be open to trying a few different diapers before you decide on the right ones for you. Sometimes a diaper that costs a little more is a better fit and works better, making it worth the extra money.

Types of Eco-Friendly Diapers

Disposable diapers make up around 7% of non durable household waste in landfills, according to a 2014 report from the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2018, around 3.3 million tons of disposable diapers end up in landfills. Eco-friendly diapers are designed to reduce landfill waste. However, not all eco-friendly diapers are equal.

1. Biodegradable diapers / Compostable diapers
All compostable items are biodegradable. However, not all biodegradable items are compostable. Biodegradable items break down into smaller pieces but do not actually “disappear,” whereas compostable products decompose into organic material under the correct conditions.

2. Sustainable diapers
Sustainable diapers have a lower impact on the environment as they are free of some of the most common chemicals contained in traditional diapers. They are generally made from plant-based materials

3. Organic, chemical-free and natural diapers
Diapers often use a wide range of labels that are often vague, non-specific, and non-scientific. These include diaper that use plant-based materials or are free of additives such as fragrances, chlorine, parabens, or colors in their diapers.

Why Choose Eco Friendly Disposable Diapers

There are some clear benefits to eco-friendly diapers, especially when compared to traditional disposables. When done correctly, compostable diapers means less diapers ending up in landfills. Those that don’t still contain some components that break down faster than a traditional disposable might.

And while they’re far from perfect, many eco-friendly diaper companies are taking steps toward sustainability, improving their production processes and designing diapers that leave less of an overall carbon footprint than old-school disposables. (Source)

Eco Boom Bamboo Diapers Review

I made sure I tested these diapers for at least a week before I sat down for a review, its always fair to give a product a good shot.

Here’s what I think:
– They really are soft.
– They claim to reduce plastic waste (no way to confirm this) but if it does its an added bonus
– They are not 100% leak proof. I have experienced leaks with my son especially in the morning when he wakes up.
– The cotton in the diaper doesn’t move around if its been worn for a couple hours, that is what I NEED because some diapers do that and they leave a chance to leak.
– Not the cheapest option out there.

Alvababy Cloth Diaper Review
It was a hard debate whether to give these 4 or 5 stars. I went with 5 stars because for the price, these are my favorite cloth diapers and will be my go-to diapers if I need to order more, but they are not what I would consider to be the best.

First of all, I’ve always struggled with the absorbency issue with cloth diapers (although, side note, I have had WAY less poop blowouts in cloth than when we use disposables when we’re on trips away from home – another perk of cloth diapers!).

So for the AlvaBaby Diapers to have the snaps for sizing and a GREAT price – I was sold. A major perk is that I can hang these diapers up in my dark, cold, below ground basement during winter in Northeast Ohio and they dry overnight – no more having to use the dryer which gives me hope that they may last longer than 2 years. I still wash them in Tide and I wash the shells in warm water, extra rinse, heavy soil setting and I wash the inserts separately – also in Tide, hot water, extra rinse, heavy soil setting.

Leaks do happen with the AlvaBaby diapers. If you look at the uploaded pictures of the one on Baby, anywhere the white, inner lining is showing is a potential leak spot where it touches Baby’s clothing. I really try to make sure that fleece lining is tucked inside the diaper, which helps to minimize leaking.

Also, several of the AlvaBaby diapers have a velvety/velour type cover which is more prone to leaks than the more “plasticy” covers because they absorb moisture from the inside liner too (see the cow print cover vs. plain blue photo).

The styles and colors available are really adorable and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments. Sorry for the lengthy review, but all in all, these are a GREAT value in cloth diapering and I would absolutely buy them again and recommend them to anyone.

Wegreeco Cloth Diapers Review
For anyone looking to try out cloth diapers without going broke, these are the way to go! They are high quality without the incredibly high price. We really didn’t need to get a whole lot of them as I’m a stay at home mom and can wash as I go. These have yet to give me any issues and no leaks so far! Only thing is to make sure to change them every 2-3 hours because the cloth diapers don’t wick away the dampness like disposable ones. We want to keep their little bottoms from getting any irritation from prolonged exposure to moisture. They are easily adjustable and can find a how to video rather quickly on YouTube to avoid any confusion.

Love these! Cannot say enough good things about them. I was nervous to cloth diaper but not only is it easier than I thought these are so cute! Ive gotten 2 packs of the pacific neutrals and a pack of the black&white geometric ones. The best part is the 7 packs come with wet/dry bags for on the go and I also just use them to hold the diapers in my house since I’m slowly building a stash and getting things set up the way I like them. 10/10 would recommend.

Anmababy Cloth Diapers Reviews
These are great! I use these for my 18 month old as night time disposable diaper covers to ensure that his pajamas stay dry through the night. It’s been about a month and they work great. Even though I use 12-hour disposable diapers he often woke up with damp pajamas. Now even I though his diapers are soaked they do not leak and he can stay comfortably dry through the night. I do not use the extra padding provided.

3. How to Wash Cloth Diapers

  • Remove inserts from pocket diapers.
  • Always use the highest water level allowed by your washer.
  • Begin with a cold rinse, with no detergent.
  • After the cold rinse, run a regular wash cycle on hot, using 1/4 cup detergent. If you're using a cloth diaper detergent, follow the instructions on the package.
  • Follow up with an extra rinse on cold to ensure all residual detergent is completely rinsed away.
  • Dry on hot.
  • Don't worry that washing cloth diapers will leave your washer stinky. It will be exactly as clean as the diaper and drains to the same place your toilet does.

4. How Often Should You Change Your Baby's Diaper?

Change your newborn’s diaper every two to three hours, or as needed, according to experts. Because if the diaper isn’t changed frequently, the baby is at risk of developing skin rashes, infections, and a variety of other health problems.
