Vitamins for Bones for Adults 2022

Healthy bones allow us to move. They shield our heart, brain, and other internal organs from injury. Additionally, our bones store minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which support bone health, and release them into the body as needed.

There are several ways we can do to maintain strong, healthy bones, for example by obtaining enough nutrients, exercising, and having good health habits. Or else, our bones can become weak and even break.

Broken bones, also known as fractures, can be uncomfortable and even require surgery to heal. They may also result in long-term health problems. Moreover, bones may be impacted by other conditions and injuries, such as:
  • Osteoporosis and osteopenia
  • Paget’s disease - a chronic bone disorder that weakens and deforms bones
  • Bone cancer
  • Rickets - affect children with an extreme and prolonged vitamin D deficiency.
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection) — usually caused by bacteria
Treatments are available in different options, depending upon the severity and type of bone disease. But, prevention is better than a cure.

What Vitamins Are Needed for Healthy Bones?

Several studies have shown that vitamin D, calcium, and recently vitamin K play an important role in the maintenance of optimal bone health, especially among older adults.

Studies showed that a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplementation was effective in the preventive treatment of osteoporosis in people aged 50 years or older. The treatment was associated with a reduced rate of bone loss, and fracture risk reduction.

Recommended Intake for Calcium and Vitamin D
For best therapeutic effect, they recommend minimum doses of 1200 mg of calcium, and 800 IU of vitamin D (for combined calcium plus vitamin D supplementation).

Several points of experimental evidence seem to outline that vitamin K plays an important role in bone health. And vitamin K deficiency is associated with several diseases, including osteoporosis and vascular calcification. (Source)

Adequate Intakes (AIs) for Vitamin K
19+ years : Male 120 mcg, Female 90 mcg

In addition to those vitamins, some evidence also showed that other vitamins are also necessary for maintaining bone health.

For instance, lack of vitamin B, along with the consequent elevated homocysteine level, are linked to bone loss, poor bone strength, and increased risk of fracture. Moreover, lack of vitamin C can lead to conditions such as scurvy, which can cause bone pain, impaired bone growth, and many more.

Other Nutrients for Bone Health

i. Magnesium
Those with magnesium deficiency are more likely to develop osteoporosis. In adults with sickle cell anemia, low serum Mg is a contributing cause to osteopenia. Furthermore, pre- and postmenopausal women have been shown to have a link between serum Mg and bone density.

Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDI) for Magnesium:
19–30 years: Male 400 mg, Female 310 mg
Above 31 years: Male 420 mg, Female 320 mg

ii. Boron
Boron has been included in nutritional supplements or natural remedies designed to improve bone and joint health. Boron deficiency has been shown to impair brain function, inflammatory regulation, and immune response, and to increase the risk of some cancers.

According to some articles, any person who consumes a diet low in fruits and vegetables, is at risk for or has osteopenia or osteoporosis should consider taking boron supplements of 3 mg/d.

iii. Potassium
Dietary potassium may neutralize acid load and reduce calcium loss from the bone, leading to beneficial effect on bone mineral density. A study showed that dietary potassium intake was positively associated with BMD in men aged >50 years and postmenopausal women, indicating the beneficial effects of dietary potassium intake on bone health.

Another finding indicate that higher dietary potassium levels have a favorable effect on bone health and preventing osteoporosis in older Korean women. Daily potassium intake was significantly related to a decreased risk of osteoporosis at the lumbar spine in postmenopausal women.

FAQ

a. How to Maintain Healthy Bones

i. Consume adequate calcium and vitamin D.

Calcium Food Sources
• Dairy foods
• Green leafy vegetables – such as curly kale, okra but not spinach (spinach does contain high levels of calcium but the body cannot digest it all)
• Bread and anything made with fortified flour
• Fish where you eat the bones – such as sardines and pilchards

Vitamin D Food Sources
Vitamin D3 is not naturally present in many foods. The flesh of fatty fish and fish liver oils are the finest sources. Cheese, beef liver, and egg yolks all contain smaller amounts.

ii. Add physical activity into your daily routine. You can strengthen your bones and reduce bone loss by engaging in weight-bearing workouts like walking, jogging, and climbing stairs.

iii. Have a healthy lifestyle. Avoid smoking. Avoid consuming more than one alcoholic beverage every day if you're a woman. Men should also limit their alcohol consumption to no more than two drinks a day.
