Best Conjugated Linoleic Acid Supplements 2024

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is indeed a type of omega-6 fatty acid, but it has a unique structure due to its conjugated double bonds. This structural difference gives CLA distinct properties and potential benefits compared to other omega-6 fatty acids.

CLA can be found in certain foods, such as dairy products and beef, as well as in supplement form. It has been touted for various health benefits, although scientific evidence supporting these claims is mixed.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid Benefits

a. Improved Body Composition

In a 12-week study with 60 overweight individuals, different doses of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were tested. Results showed that CLA led to a greater reduction in body fat mass compared to a placebo. Doses of 3.4 g and 6.8 g per day were particularly effective. No significant differences were found in lean body mass or blood safety variables. This suggests that CLA may help reduce body fat in humans, with doses over 3.4 g per day not providing extra benefits.

Even though, CLA supplementation has been linked to improvements in body composition, including reductions in body fat percentage, further studies are needed to confirm this and the effects may vary among individuals.

b. Antioxidant Properties

CLA exhibits antioxidant properties, which may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

According to Sprague-Dawley rats study, dietary supplementation of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) demonstrated antioxidant properties by reducing hepatic lipid peroxidation and increasing hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity, thereby enhancing oxidative stability in plasma and hepatic membranes.

Another study also suggest that CLA compounds could serve as useful food antioxidants and provide additional value because of their potential bioactivity in disease prevention.

While some studies support their antioxidant effect, further research is needed due to inconsistent findings in other studies.

c. Potential Anti-Cancer Effects

CLA shows inhibitory effects against multistage carcinogenesis at relatively low dietary levels, based on numerous in vivo and in vitro studies. (S)

Even though research indicates that CLA may have anti-cancer properties, although further studies are needed to confirm this potential benefit.
